Default DSL service

Hey!
I am trying to get DSL internet in my apartment. Does anyone know which provider is the best, Verizon said that I need to have a phone line to get internet service. Comcast is just too expensive.
I saw a company called Cavilier, Are they any good?
Any Recommendations?
thank you!

Think that you will run into the same issue with Cav tel...You really can't be the speed that the Comcast service offers...

The Comcast comment is not correct. Look at the Comcast ads and what they compare their service to. It's usually 768kbps DSL which is not even offered anymore by most DSL providers. Check out Speakeasy.net, Earthlink.net or Covad.net for DSL services. Also, check out WWW.Broadbandreports.com. It's a great unbiased website which covers all broadband options.

I recently tried Cavtel DSL and it was terrible. From the connection to the service, everything was bad. I had the service for less than two weeks before I cancelled and bit the Comcast bullet. Comcast is a hog, but I can't deny that the service they provide and connection speed doesn't even compare to what I had with Cavtel. I can't comment as to other DSL providers, though. Do a PB search on DSL and you will find more information on this subject than you even probably want to know.

I'd recommend Cavalier. I've used them for years and have been happy. The only downside is that installation can take a while. This is not really their fault - Verizon has to do the actual wiring work since they own the lines. And considering that verizon gives their direct customers crappy service and installation times, it is longer for them to deal with their 'non-customers' - aka Cavalier requests.

Cavalier's phone support is not great either, but not too bad and better than Verizon. Mother in-law was just trying to get DSL in her new apt through Verizon. She ordered on Oct 5th, and the phone was turned on but no dsl. Was supposed to be on two weeks ago, they moved it back two weeks. Yesterday after calling them and being on hold for hours, they told her it would be another two weeks. Needless to say she cancelled it, called comcast, and they'll be there on Tuesday.

But if you are lucky and can avoid issues from Verison, Cavalier is a good choice in the long run. And they offer up to 10MBPS now too.

Thumbs up

I have my DSL service with Verizon and I'm very happy with them, but then again I already had the phone line. I subscribed through AOL and received the kit within 5 days of ordering the service. Of course, prior to Verizon, I was using dial-up so I guess any DSL service would have seemed great to me.

I have had Earthlink since about "99" and have been very happy with the speed and support. It is not as fast as comcast but their service been very good.

My wife works out of the home and has Comcast in her office. It's the fastest I've seen.
On our family pc, we've had Verizon which I was never happy with. I swear they sell customer info. I've never rec'd the amount of spam from any provider as I do from Verizon. This goes for their phone service as well. It may be coincidence, but within 6 hours of having her new office phone line installed, my wife was receiving calls from solicitors.
On a related note, not being technically saavy, can anyone tell me what I need to do to get the Comcast on my home pc, after I get rid of Verizon? The Comcast installer mentioned setting up a router, but wouldn't go into any detail.
Any advice would be appreciated.
