Thank God I have a permit to carry and a .38. It looked like something out of the wire. Boarded up houses. Houses with bars and trash. In addition to drug addicts on the corners. Yikes!!!!!!

You didn't say where on Toronto? Around 22nd & Toronto? I haven't been in that neighborhood for a long time, the last time I was there it was pretty bad, and I doubt it's better now. At any rate, I wouldn't go alone, that's for sure.

Never been there before. Never going back. It's sad because the house styles sort of reminded me of Mayfair. Each house had steps up to a porch area. Shame because at one time it was probably really nice. Now, NOT SO MUCH!!!!

That neighborhood was 98% white in 1963 and 90% black in 1969. It is a case study in the collapse of a neighborhood, and explains why some white people are so uncomfortable when black people move into a previously white neighborhood.

I came from that neighborhood; my family lived a few blocks away from 21st & Toronto. It was a VERY nice neighborhood at one time.
![]() Everything was within walking distance, our school, our church, the 22nd street shopping district; even all of our relatives lived close by.. We did a lot of our grocery shopping at the mom-and-pop stores. We could walk to the movies, to the playground, just about everywhere; in fact, quite a few people (including us) didn't have cars back then because they weren't needed. My dad took the bus to and from work, the bus stop was 3 blocks from our house. By the time we moved in 1962, we were one of the 2 or 3 white families left on our street, out of about 40 houses. I haven't been back there for many years, but the last time I saw my "house" I almost cried when I saw the condition of it because I remember how hard my parents worked to keep it up when we lived there. ![]() I like living in Roxborough, but I miss that neighborhood a lot....sigh.... |
