I just bought a house in the Logan/Hunting Park area last month. Being an apartment dweller the past 3 years, I am not that familiar with the garbage collection system here in Philly.
This morning, someone left a trashbag in the sidewalk in front of my house. As a result, I was ticketed for $25 because of it. I called the number on the ticket and was told to fill up a certain form and mail it to set up a hearing date. What are my chances of getting the ticket revoked if I go to court? I know $25 is not that much, but I am fighting not for the money but for the principle of it. Anyone had any experiences fighting a trash violation ticket before? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

YES! this is what I did. I took a picture of my neighbors garbage and made sure that both my house and their house showed on the pic. I went and fought it told them they ticketed the wrong house and won, didn't have to pay. I also ended up calling the sanitation dept on my neighbor (he got a few tixs) but he got the point. Problem solved.

Thanks for replying, ms_evelyng. I will try to dispute it but in my case the trashbag was directly in front of my house, not my neighbor's. The only proof that I have that it is not mine is I use white trashbags whereas the one that was left in my house was black. How long does the whole hearing last (include waiting time)? Will it take an hour, half a day, the whole day?

Well my issue was that my neighbor and I share a small area on front of our houses where HE kepted his garbage. I had also warned him about not leaving garbage on non pick-up days.
I went during my lunch hour. I recall is the building where the FYE CD/DVD store is located on Broad St. Do expect to wait up to 30 min or more...There were maybe 5 people ahead of me when I got there, but is was not a long wait. Quote:

Didn't you even read the dang post? "this morning, someone left a trashbag in the sidewalk in front of my house." |

Yes I read the post and I don't believe a stranger left the trash. The poster said he didn't know trash collection system. Why would he make that statement if someone else left the trash? I think the poster left the trash.

zete_374, as I said in my previous post I used white trashbags and the trashbag that was left was black. The reason I mentioned I am not familiar with the trash collection system is because I do not know about how a hearing is conducted if I dispute the ticket not because I left the trashbag in my sidewalk and did not know there was a fine for it.
But you do give a valid point. Will the judge believe that it is not my trash when I go to the hearing? I was so pissed off about this incident the other day that I was really tempted to open the trashbag and see if there is some name or something to identify who threw it. Anyway, I guess the only way to find out if I have a case is to go to the hearing. |
