This morning's Wall Street Journal featured a front-page article on the threats posed by development to the remarkable horsemen of North Philadelphia. The online edition has an article that's free to nonsubscribers (I think) and that includes a slide show and a short video.

That is absolutely awesome. It makes me so sad and angry when development happens at the expense of things like this. (And don't even get me started on misuse of eminent domain.) If they must leave that spot, I hope they can find a place close by to keep the horses.

That is so interesting. I am having trouble picturing it. Is it just people squatting with makeshift horsebarns? Does anyone have pictures?
It seems impossible that there is nowhere else they could move that to properly, with all the underused land around here. They just need to get hooked up with some suburban horselovers, those people have more money than they know what to do with. They'd have a brand new stable in no time. But who knew land in Strawberry Mansion was so "in demand?" |

I always liked the to watch the horses. Usually, if there is some sort of festival, they will come by with the horses and I think ponies, and let the young children ride.
Unfortunately, I live close to the stables and that's one smell you can do without on a hot summer morning.

yeah, sorry, I got that from the article, I meant for it to be a little sarcastic. the article makes it sound like gentrification is pushing out the horsies.
but I nominate this thread for "best title of thread ever." |

Thank you. Mr. lbphilly and I photographed that urban horseman mural a few weeks ago. It's an awe-inspiring sight when you come upon it not expecting it. If you catch it from the corner of your eye, for a moment you would think there was indeed a ghost rider in the sky.
