Yeah, according to my next door neighbor who is a Camden City cop, the Bloods and Crips are coming down from North Jersey. We've had 26 murders so far this year. I think that already surpasses our total for last year. If it hasn't yet it will. Luckily, we've had none in my district. It's mostly in S. Camden, which our version of N. Philly. Anyway, the uptick is supposedly due to increased gang activity.

In response, the Camden City police department is moving to fixed shifts that overlap by two hours, in order to put more cops on the streets during busy hours. They'll be using the same level of man power, just more effectively. They're also moving cops out of desk jobs and putting them back out on the street. Civilians will be hired to fill the desk jobs, which I would imagine are mostly low level administrative positions.

If that's true, I would consider it progress. As things stand, the street culture in Philadelphia is too uncivilized and anarchic to entertain gangs. All we have now are informal groupings are kids from different blocks or different intersections. Imagine how much easier the police could do their job if all they had to do was go after large gangs with organized hierarchies versus the "52nd Street Crew."

There's more gang activity in Jersey than Philly

Wrong. Gang activity directly effects the murder rate. And we have plenty of gangs here in Philly. Yes, there are loosely affiliated gangs in the neighborhoods, but there are organized gangs as well. Almost every high profile area has some. They don't have the movie of the week names, but they are just as ruthless and organized and have the members and firepower to back it up.
We also have the more "famous" gangs as well. The Latin Kings. The MS13, the Bloods, the Crips, and on and on.

Philly is too wonderfully lame to have gangs in this day and age.

Back in the 70's and 80's there was a big gang problem in Philly. Chaka Fattah's mother, aka"Queen Mother Falaka. Then known as Sister Falaka Fattah. I guess she got an upgrade.Started the House of Umoja to help get kids off the street and out of gangs.
