Today I found a "relic" in Olney. I walked by some dirt and a metal tag with writing caught my eye. I picked it up and it was a very rusted, worn ID tag once worn by a dog.
It says BUTCH RETURN ME TO DORIS KOVALCYN 5468 MERVINE ST. PHILA, 41, PA DA 9 3122 Now, the tag looks like it was made by an amateur, as the letters are not lined up too neatly, and MERVINE is not the right spelling of MARVINE ST (right near where I found it). The 41 is the zip 19141. I'm not sure the"D" in the phone#is a D, that part is really worn, but the rest is quite legible. I know it's been a long time since letters were used in phone#'s, so that's why I think this is old. Plus there's no area code 215. Does anyone remember what letters were used in phone exchanges in Olney? I'm trying to date this tag. Maybe JoeOlney wants a pic of it for his website! I'm sure Butch and Doris are long gone, but it would be something if I can track how long ago Doris lived at 5468 Marvine. That would be a big clue. Construction people have been doing some digging in this area and I think the tag may have been buried for years.

The zone number--41 instead of the current 19141 zipcode--and the phone number beginning with the letters DA and no area code--date the dog tag to the early 1960's or before. Zipcodes.com says zipcodes were introduced in 1963.
I checked voter registration records and found nobody named Kovalcyn registered to vote in Pennsylvania today. Nor is anybody by that name locatable by a google search. I would not be surpised if the tag was ordered at Vahle's pet store around 6th and Olney, the leading pet store in the area in the 1950's and 1960's, where I got tags for my dog then. I frequently went there in the 1960s for food, toys, grooming equipment, leashes and nail clippings for my border collie Frisky.

Marvine St. is right next to Albert Einstein Medical Center, which is where I found the tag.
There's no vet's number on there. Also the V in Kovalcyn is very worn, it is possible that it could be a different letter, maybe a Y, or W, not sure. It's funny that it may have been lying around for about 40 years! Too bad I can't reach the Kovalcyn (or whatever spelling) family and let them know! It would be sentimental to me as a pet lover.

Look carefully at the tag nad check the number again...there isnt a BRT result for that address...unless that house is gone. It should be the corner house from what it looks like.
