Ok, I used to watch too many Twilight Zone episodes!

I lived in Fern Rock many years ago from 1962 until 1977 when I then moved out to my own apartment, (and my parents moved to their retirement home in NJ the following year- they are now both deceased for 15 years), we lived near the train tracks that separated our neighborhood from Olney, only separated by the smaller Fern Rock parking lot next to our back driveway, so we crossed those tracks as a short cut into Olney frequently when our parents were not aware... we were very sneaky since they could catch us just by looking out a back window of the house! (we were fast runners!) Also, we were right next the Fern Rock subway station. We were rocked to sleep by all those trains going past for 15 years...me and my sisters still miss those sounds! We lived on the 5900 block of Hutchinson Street (between the cross streets of Nedro Ave. and Champlost.) It was a great place to grow up! A lot of the surrounding area was still woods, so that was our playground. All our neighbors were so great- just like family to us! Me and my family (and, of course our neighbors) did spend much of our daily lives though, in Olney- visiting friends, doing all our shopping & grocery shopping there, going to restaurants, going to school and social and recreational events, etc. We loved 5th Street the best. Quite a variety of stores there back then! We loved Fisher's Park and the Fern Rock Theatre! It was wonderful with it's beautiful interior and huge chandelier and balconies! We spent many happy Saturdays there watching movies or visiting the library on 5th Street. We got our pets at Vahle's Pet shop. We ended up having a small zoo at our house. We love animals. I went to Lowell & Olney High schools. Howe school (at 13th & Grange St.til 6th grade, Lowell (at 5th & Nedro for 7th & 8th, Cooke for 9th, then Olney High for the remaining grades, 10th thru 12th. I've since lived in Fox Chase, Five Points, Castor Gardens, and am presently in Oxford Circle for the last 21 years.
Our old phone exchange on Hutchinson Street back then was LI , which was Livingston, or Livingstone. I'd gladly call my old phone number...but it would be spooky. It was LI9-4076. Yep, I still remember it after 30 years! If anyone wants to call it....do please let me know who answers! Geez...I hope it isn't me!

I love these old "remember when" types of stories. What is great that most of us, although we lived in different neighborhoods, all have basically have the same types of memories.

Then if you have some time you might want to visit the 'Tell Me About Olney' thread and add your memories.

Yeah I guess I could do that, or I could copy & paste my post there or a Mod here can move it.

I now see there is also a "Tell me about Fern Rock" thread. Oh, I have so many memories to add to that...it would really end up being a novel...so maybe one day when I do have the time, I will then input some of my own.

I think it's great that there are so many people here with postings about the neighborhoods they grew up in, too.
