Default Safety Near Spring Garden & 10

Hi, I'm looking at buying a house around 10th and Spring Garden and am a little worried about the crime in the area. I walked around the area during the day from Market up to Mount Vernon and I noticed a number of desolate areas that caused me some concern. I am a young, rather petite, woman and am wondering if there is any reason I should be concerned for my safety walking in that neighborhood. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Most of the posters on here would probably consider it a borderline area. There are some intact blocks, and there's some blight. Probably not a lot of activity on the sidewalks - you've already gotten a feeling for that. If you're nervous up there you might want to look somewhere a little less frontiersy.

Then again, in 5 years it might be the "next hot neighborhood." You never know.

Thanks so much. That's the impression I was getting. I think I'm going to drive through it at night to see how it is then. One of my co-workers suggested knocking on doors of neighbors in the area.

I'd expecially appreciate hearing from anyone who lives in the area or knows people that live in the area.

This is absolutely not a good place for a female to be walking around at night. A girl was raped at 13th and Callowhill just a few weeks ago. The projects are just north of Spring Garden and South of SG is the so-called warehouse district..plenty of bums and other shady character wondering around back there. Some homeless shelters and half-ways houses in the area too not to mention a plethora of dark alleys.

Actually, I live a few blocks from there, and I'm a dangerous psychotic!

Seriously, a buddy of mine used to live on 10th and Green, and it was a freaky scene at night.

Default Now wait a minute . . .

I've lived on Green between 11/12 for seven years, now. This immediate area is *not* frontiery at all.

Getting home from downtown at night is sometimes a concern--would that the Broad Street Line ran later than it does. Failing that, the cab ride's not all that much money.

All in all--yeah, I'd be concerned walking around north or south of here at night. I found myself walking home from work at 4/Girard in the wee hours once last fall and the portion of the walk that cut through Richard Allen (or whatever it's now called . . .) wasn't pleasant; I've never felt great between SG and Vine at night. Right here is fine, though.

I would go elsewhere. DO NOT "knock on doors" in the area.

I just want to emphasize this!

What is it that attracts you to the area? The price?

Looking at this Google Maps the area is a lot of empty space...With the Spaghetti Wearhouse and the future train gardens(Old rail EL structure turn into a park)

Not going to change for a long while....
