What do you think of these area? Safe in pockets or hell-holes?
Would you be ok coming home there after dark? What about the Thriftway and A&P -- are they decent or do they suck?

Areas are dangerous now thanks to the wonderfull social program called section-8 housing. |

Penn and Wakeling has some amazing houses there. Sadly after WWII most were carved up into numerous, small, low priced rentals. Too few residents are actually invested there. It has been that way for decades. It's a shame as the buildings are really impressive, or were a long time ago.
When I lived around that way it was always quiet but seedy. Things probably haven't changed much. What has changed is that the stable areas of more modest houses to the west (where I lived) got hit with heavy Section 8'ing in the 90s. When I lived at Pratt and Saul, the Thriftway was a good fill-in market. I wouldn't go there for regular food shopping, but it was great to be able to walk there and pick up necessities. They had a decent seafood selection and their prices were reasonable. I'd be surprised if there was an A&P around there. Their stores in this area are called Superfresh and Food Basics. There was an A&P at one time, across what is now Romano's Caters, but that has been gone almost 20 years. |

Thank you all of you for your perspective. Most of the information was very helpful and informative. I have decided to move elsewhere in the city and am quite happy where I am.
