Default Deadly End to Attempted Robbery

Quote:
Store Owner Opens Fire

By Matt O'Donnell

WEST OAK LANE - March 8, 2007 - Philadelphia police say a shop owner shot two people who were trying rob his business in Philadelphia early Thursday morning. One of them is dead, the other is hospitalized. Action News and 6abc.com have obtained cell phone video showing the restaurant owner dealing with one of the suspects.

The report of gunfire came in just after 6:30 a.m. from an off-duty officer who heard the shots along the 1900 block of East Washington Lane.
Police say that at 6:40 this morning two men attempted to rob the Sunrise Breakfast Shop.

During their holdup attempt, the suspects fired at least 2 shots at the merchant. Then the shopkeeper fired back. He shot one of them in the head, killing him. The other suspect was hit in the face and the back. Police recovered what they say is one of the guns the suspects used during the holdup attempt.

Action News obtained footage of video taken on a cellular phone. On it, the restauarnt owner is seen following one of the suspects out of the shop and forcing him to the ground. The owner then goes back inside, but comes out again when the suspect gets up and tries to get away. The store owner forces the suspect back to the ground again before the video ends.
The man who shot the cell phone video wants to remain anonymous, but he did talk to Action News. "I heard 2 shots, it sounded like they were off in the distance. I heard about three more shots that were closer. Then I heard about 2 more shots. I got up, ran downstairs, grabbed my camera."
"I think he got robbed about 4 or 5 times before," the man with the video cell phone told Action News. "I think he was ready this time. As a matter of fact, the aftermath shows that he was ready this time."

Action News was there as police took the restaurant owner in for questioning. Philadelphia police say the restaurant owner had a permit to have the gun, and that he was doing what he had to do to defend his business and his family.

Good for him!

Sweet.

I'm sure given the murder climate in the city, shooting a robber in the back isn't that likely to get you sent off to prison.

It's not going to be hard to select a jury made up of people who live in violent neighborhoods.

It must be some parallel universe!

Im amazed the shop owner wasnt hit and he managed to shoot both of the robbers....one fatally in the head.

I bet youll hear that the suspects were "nice guys" that helped little old ladies cross the street LOL....

My wife spends a lot of time working in the ER.
Every person shot claims to have been minding their own business on their way to church.

I didn't believe this until I worked in an ER myself...only some people I talked to claimed to be on their way to church. Most told me they were shot by "some dudes" they didn't know...while minding their own business. The worst was when I entered a room to assess someone as they were detaching themselves from their monitors...one patient was shot multiple times in the abdomen and left AMA to "settle some business". I cannot imagine living like that...

According to a report I read elsewhere, this is the second time in 14 years this store owner has had to defend himself in such a way.

"settle some business"...

The last time I was in my local Verizon store to get my cell phone replaced. Next to me at the service desk was this big guy with jailhouse tattoos, grills, a big State Property coat, multiple rings on about 5 fingers, and he was BOILING mad about his phone.

No big deal, right?

Well, he was upset about the Verizon representative telling him that his phone would not be ready to pick up until 4:30. Nearly at the top of his lungs he was arguing the point that he had a business meeting at 4.

Mind you, this is a Verizon store in a well known Center City skyscraper. I see office workers everyday around this particular area, and this person did not appear to be one who had an "urgent matter" to attend to anywhere up in the high rises.

If you click cerebrus's video link and watch the TV coverage this morning, they actually played the older video clip.

Actually, this is the SECOND time the store owner has killed a would-be robber in 14 years. A bystander said this is about the 5th or 6th time he's been robbed. Between killings, he moved his store to a different location in WOL.

I mean... the chances of you getting robbed at gunpoint running a store in Philly are probably higher than hitting the lotto... but to have it happen to you twice? That's just nutty.

And it wasn't even a convenience store... it was one of those little breakfast delis. Not exactly your typical target.
