There's a huge abandoned building pretty much right across the street from the North Philadelphia train station. Maybe you're thinking of that one?

Quote:
(cue Wrath of Khan vocals "Botany Bay? BOTANY BAY!) Big, nasty scary looking building in what was once the heart of the industrial center of Philadelphia. Perhaps Philadephia's most Shellely-esque monument to coal as king and blue-collar jobs based on hand-crafting... I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert ... Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works ye mighty and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away. -- Percy Shelley Hal Last edited by Hal : 01-14-2007 at 10:41 PM. |

It's the Beury Building : Follow this link - it's the 3rd picture down
http://jim-frizzell.com/philadelphia...germantown.htm This represents the hideousness of what it is now The following link is a small depiction of what it look like when I lived in the neighborhood : http://www.phillyhistory.org/PhotoAr...px?ImageId=798 I would post the actual pictures, but it would make my brain explode ! Originally, this was the National Bank of North Philadelphia; at the time I was growing up (1950's - 1960's) , it was just another major office building across the street from my school and church - St Stephen's Parochial @ Broad and Butler, a block further north on Broad Street, north also of Erie Avenue. Another link to the more historic aspects of this wonderful art deco structure; with membership to the architectural affiliation, you can view the full history: http://www.philadelphiabuildings.org...lay.cfm/134993 Last edited by jonahb : 01-14-2007 at 11:42 PM. |
