Hello,
As a kid, in the forties and fifties, I recall walking past the Beury Building and never knowing what was in there. I just remember that in the winter the wind blew you along that stretch of sidewalk. The next building down the street, toward Erie Avenue, was a bank called Girard Trust Corn Exchange Bank, where I had my first bank account. Across Broad Street from the Beury Building was a triangle of land, quite small, bordered by Broad Street, Germantown Avenue, and Butler Street. That's where we always bought our Christmas trees. I don't know if the triangle is still there. Many of the houses on the east side of Broad Street, from St. Stephen's north, were really magnificent. When I was a safety, 1954-55, my post was the southeast corner of Broad and Pike Streets. The houses in that block, while not posh, were considerably nicer than my house on Nice Street. On Hallowe'en we went to those houses because they gave nickel candy bars instead of penny candy. An odd turn of events, to my child mind, was that in that block were two funeral homes: Murphy's and McGlone's. Murphy showed up there one year, and then maybe two or three years later McGlone opened up. The parish, St. Stephen's, had a bishop as its rector: J. Carroll McCormick. His uncle was Cardinal Dougherty, one of Philadelphia's Catholic bigwigs. When I was in high school I learned that our parish was one on the wealthiest in the city. Putting two and two together I figured the uncle used to throw money to the nephew; maybe. I digress so easily! Just a little neighborhood history. Warm regards, Edward Gavin edgavin42@verizon.net |

Now the Beury is covered in graffiti with giant "BONER 4EVER" on both the north and south faces.
FYI..Boner and 4ever are two graffiti writers, but it's always great to see them come together. ![]()

I recently read a book called "Walking Broad" . A journalist walked down Broad St. from end to end and wrote about various things he saw.
The author mentions the Botany 500 building and said it has become a crack/homeless hangout. The buliding is still owned by some overseas corporate magnate.

I grew up in the 3600 block of Sydenham...Graduated 8th grade at St Stephen's in '49...Used to pass the Beury Bldg every day and when I was lucky enough to have a nickel I would sometimes stop and buy a candy bar at the newsstand in the lobby...Sometimes the Taffy Man in a white suit would be selling taffy on Erie and we'd buy 2ç worth...Also loved Marquetand's butter creams from the shop on Germantown Ave...I roller skated at the Crystal Palace and the Carman skating rink...Life was beautiful...
Now living near Wilkes-Barre, retired, active in community theater...Life is still beautiful, yes? |
