So Europe does not have any poverty or crime or civil unrest. That's funny, I was pretty sure they actually do. I guess that's because Europe limits immigration and is comfortable openly oppressing, for example, the algerians and other immigrants -- those not "european." You have found the true paradise on earth in Europe. Maybe we should send all residents you mentioned earlier who are oppressed here to Europe to improve their quality of life.

PS: the moment Sony offered its toy at $600, it presented an invitation to bid that amount. You can bid less if you like and Sony might take it or might not, just like a house. I doubt they'd waste their time entertaining individual offers, but they can if they want. Likewise, homes are usually not sold at auction to bidders; they are offered for sale at a specific price. When that offer is accepted, the price becomes the market rate for that house. If the offered price is below market, interested buyers will offer above asking; if the price is above market, interested buyers will offer below asking. According to you, the offering price for the Sony toy is $600. If it won't sell at that price, the market will force price decline. If demand far outstrips supply, you will see them for sale for more than $600. Sony spent a lot of time and money determining what the market would pay for such a toy, how many would be bought at that rate, and what it would cost to make. It also determined it would make a profit on the difference or else it never would have launched it. Market will set the price. Pretty much the same for toys as houses.
You basically proved my point about "market rate" being determined before the product hits the market. Without a doubt this is how real estate planning works.

Europe:

Why not look up the murder rates in some major cities and compare them to say, Philly. Then, you can explore what it's like to be "poor," perhaps "have less money" is a better term, in Europe.

OK, we're off on a tangent here. Europe and most of the rest of the world certainly has a different culture than America and housing ownership prices, however you want to argue they are set, are above the level that many low income people can afford. Great.

Let's get back to raising children in north philly, which I take as how to develop the next generation in an area with high levels of poverty.

Does that mean that I won?

Just kidding.

The original topic is good and I think that it's wise to learn how other humans have improved their situation.

There is an increase in childhood obesity and I think these video games have something to do with it, but perhaps it is safer to stay inside now.

First, I'll say that this isn't only happening in N.Philly. Video games have a part to play but you also have some parents that are worried about the violence that could pop off at any given moment, so they keep their children inside. But also, now adays kids have more choices indoors than they do outside. Where else could you play with your PSP, Playstation, XBOX or computer? Crime might also be a reason why parents by their kids these kinds of toys that seem to make you lazy.

On the obesity thing I think it has something to do with the food that's available in the neighorhood. When your only choices are fast food, Chinese take-out and horrible markets that would never sell that crap in the burbs or better parts of Philadelphia, you see that their are only a few results available. Some folks have never left their neighborhood to know that their are better markets out their like Wholefoods(more expensive but still better). Which seem to also have better sales and fresher products.

You are correct about the fact that parents in dangerous parts of town keep the kids inside. So kids don't even know the other children living right in the same area.

I imagine that sometimes this helps the kids, but then I wonder if a steady diet of media fantasy doesn't make some kids just yearn for the streets. Instead of living a normal life they go out to live a life that they think is true, but is really a reflection of TV.

From my many encounters with criminals I've met at least three non-insane Ninjas. One guy used to enjoy breaking into homes, while the people were still there, to see if he could steal undetected. That, and lots more, are an example of living in a fabtasy world.

Obesity:

It's a problem across the US, so it's not just about Philly or a certain part of town. The fact is that getting fat (not just a little) is the result of using food in ways that go beyond the need to eat.
