Does anyone remember playing tire ball in the alleys? All the fathers played as well as the kids.
When a bar was called a Tap Room? Used to go to Tony Spinias and get veal cutlets for dinner i remember him pounding them flat on the butchers block. That Bakery on 2nd and Nedro i bought bake goods there many times . I can right now taste and smell that place, cinnamon Buns Crumb cake etc etc Hoggies every neighborhood had a corner store that sold them. Also penny candy stores, where for a dime u got a bag full. Soft Pretezels only in Philly Bryers and abbots ice cream Penny pretzels I could go on and on as i said before Olney was great place to live. Sneaking on trolley car on olney ave then sneaking on subway at olney station was last stop in those days My Dad was a on the road salesman and i lived on Howard st between Grange and Nedro |

You are all bringing back great memories. The Schwartzwald had great food, I worked there as a busboy in the early 70's. Does anyone remember Fath's they had steak sandwiches grilled . The old SunRay at 5th and Olney and Jerry's Market at 5th and Fisher.

The Schwartzwald Inn had great food and always seemed to be busy. On their menu they usually had an entree called "The Frugalizer" which was usaually a chopped steak. The owner Anna was always present in the front of the restaurant overseeing everything. I remember "Fath's", it was right next to the stationary store. The restaurant had those cool looking green kid size tables with the seats attached to them. Before Fath's was in business Bill Fath was the manager of the Rifle Club at 8th and Tabor Rd. later on he and his wife opened the Olney Book exchange on Olney Ave right next to Chris Lunch. |
