I was a LaSalle Commuter student in the middle 80s and travelled through Olney twice a day. Tabor Road had such cool houses and a cool vibe but felt too tenuous to consider it as a place to move to. I was a funeral on Tabor Road a couple of years ago and those blocks hadn't really changed much at all, which was nice to see.

Thus explaining the famous Schwartzwald Inn in Olney. It definitely was a sign of the times when it was sold and became a Korean restaurant.

I almost forgot about the Schwartzwald Inn. My grandparents, both 1st generation Germans, loved that place. They'd go there on special occasions and certain times of the year when hossenfepper (sp?) was on the menu.

It was on Olney Avenue near 2nd St. The building is still there.

Try the Olney Times. They've been around for a pretty long time and they might have articles from far back in their office. They do post those old pictures previously published.

The library's website also has a blurb about the history of Olney.

Good luck with your paper.

I also wanted to add, any of you who were familiar with Olney remember the Farmers Market across from Jerry's produce and Deli? I LOVED that place as a kid.

Things I remember in Olney are.........Weber's hardware, The WHimsey Card shop, SOUND ODDESY, Gettlins records, The Olney Queen restaurant, Michaels seafood on Olney ave. Colney's deli where all the trashmen would buy their beer on a payday. The Tabor Deli, ZAPFS music store, Firestone and their cold cold water fountain. Sledding at Fisher park and the stories of Dead man's hill. Attending said FISHER PARK DAYYYYYYYYY CAMP, A Five and Ten where we bought our presnets for all occasions, and a woolworths that had wooden floors that made a lovely sound when you walked, they also had a cool lunch counter. Oh and dont forget Zahles Pet shop on Olney I used to love spending time in there. Mr Buluva's Jewelry store, JACKS DONUTS, man you knew the neighborhood was going to be changed forever when that closed !!! They had the best coffee in town!

I liked Peppino's, the little Italian restaurant on 5th near Chew. They used to have an old guy playing mandolin and singing in Italian during dinner sometimes.
