Default Will The Shore be ready for Summer?

Monday's storm destroy the beaches, two weeks before the offical opening of Summer.

Shore Towns Deal With Coastal Flooding

With only a few exceptions, the best way to get into West Wildwood Monday was on foot.

"I think it's going to be bad," Wagner said, adding that he's "a little worried."

Mike Wagner came with a buddy from upper Bucks County to check on his West Wildwood summerhouse after hearing from a neighbor early Monday morning.

Wagner said his neighbor called at about 5 a.m. and said, "'Mike, the worst case scenario.'"

Steve Braciszewski came from Philadelphia's Port Richmond section to check on his summer house in West Wildwood, but he couldn't get anywhere near it.

"I thought I was going to make it, but it looks real bad ahead," he said. "I was surprised, I knew there was going to be rain and high winds but I didn't expect it to flood down here."

Usually at low tide in West Wildwood, the water goes down and the situation gets better. It didn't on Monday Greenberg reported, standing in water up to his ankles.

"I moved here four, five years ago. It's the worst I've seen it," Kokos said.

Winds along the Jersey Shore churned up the surf and caused what was expected to be severe beach erosion in many towns.

The story was similar further up the coast in Atlantic County, which was also pounded all day with wind gusts and driving rain.
Violent waves crashed the shoreline in Ventnor, breaching protective walls and causing minor flooding on beachfront streets.

Wind gusts also wreaked havoc on Atlantic City's boardwalk. The Trump Taj Mahal sign blew out. Parts of other attractions flew from their foundation, causing certain spots of the boardwalk to be closed for the day.

So this brings up the question...how bad is it going to be for the shore the next couple of weeks when they have no beach?

A lot of non-essential AC operations were shut down at 2:30 before high tide yesterday. I guess this is what happens when you drop a quarter of the Greenland ice shelf into the Atlantic.

I actually heard something last night about a $6M beach replenishment project that was luckily stalled. I think they said it was slated for sometime last week, then pushed back...sounds like it was a close call, but the beaches should be fine. (not sure if the project focused on one town in particular though).

I called it, now the MSM is catching up:

Despite what ultimately could be a scramble for Shore towns trying to quickly ready the beaches for visitors in a couple of weeks, some experts say yesterday's storm could have been much worse.

Yesterday's nor'easter left significant beach erosion up and down the New Jersey coast.

From Long Beach Island south to Cape May, the storm chewed cliffs of sand as high as 12 feet into the dunes in towns such as Atlantic City, Ocean City and Avalon.

The severe beach damage comes just days before the unofficial start of summer - the Memorial Day weekend.

In Ocean City, officials deployed front-end loaders and other heavy equipment to begin grooming the sand.

Coastal storms are common in winter, but the "Mother's Day Storm of 2008" acted as if it had wandered into the wrong season.

"It's very unusual to get it in May," said Jim Eberwine of the National Weather Service.

The nor'easter - so named for the onshore winds it generates out of the Northeast - was spawned by a storm in the Ohio Valley that transferred its energy to the southeast coast, Eberwine said. It moved slowly northeast yesterday.

"It's a perfect setup for bringing up this kind of wind and wave action and tidal flooding," he said.

It's a common setup in winter, but not in May.

Not positive but I believe this project is slated for Ocean City.
