What lewblum said ... gets crowded in summer, but they recently replenished the beach giving a little bit more sand to spread out on. Some drunken New Yawkers but lots less punk kids due to lack of boardwalk.

I recommend Surf City for middle of the isle access, mini-golf close by, easy drive/bike ride to Ol' Barney, some decent food joints near by, and my fav Blue Claw seafood for buying your own don't forget the Key Lime Pie too.

(Just don't dig deep enough to uncover the WWI munitions)

Island State Park off of Seaside Heights, NJ

Haven't been there in about 2 years, but it was $7.00 a car load, you can eat on the beach, shower and change, with out have the hassles of paying extra on the board walk to shower and change.

Then after your done the beach you can go over to Seaside Heights for the boardwalk.

I'd just say Ocean City, NJ. Like it or hate it, it has a boardwalk with rides for the kids. It's no booze, so you won't be stuck in a house next to a bunch of loud 20 somethings. Stone Harbor is also nice, & mostly quiet, however OC has more to do I think for a 3 & 8 year old.

Default Point Pleasant Beach, NJ

They have a nice boardwalk with fun rides and a cute aquarium, lots of food (sit-down and take-out) including a huge tiki bar, plus a fair amount of parking... not to mention a great public library with lots of free programs. Well worth the drive for the kiddies.

I try to take Ellery to the Rohobeth area (Rohobeth, Lewes, Dewey) for a week every August. It's got a kid-friendly boardwalk, a nice main street area, and really good restaurants.

One more for OCNJ. My family has been going there since I was a kid and now we take the whole crew of neices, nephews. Their ages range from 2-10 and it really suits them all. Plus the short drive is a bonus.

Default Lbi

My Mom has a little shack on LBI just outside of Beach Haven.

It seems very family friendly. There is no boardwalk though. But there is Fantasy Island and a bunch of other family themed things. http://www.fantasyislandpark.com/

It is just north of Brigantine and takes me about an hour and ten minutes from the Ben Franklin to the Causeway (the bridge to the island) doing speed of traffic - close to the speed limit. There is a common misperception that LBI is up north somewhere but it is actually just a little south of Philly.

I love it - it is a very long skinny island - so it is usually just a couple blocks from the beach to the bay. It sits further out at sea than other islands so it is always very breezy. And the waves tend to be better than other islands. It just has a very cool laid back feel. At least the part I am used to. I am not sure about areas like Loveladies where everything is multimillion dollar sand castles.
