Considering how long it takes the Ferry to get from Cape May to Lewes, 17 miles distance @ 80 minutes one way and the distance is how many times that from Philly? ... I doubt it would be practical or economical.

Maybe a "speed boat" type ferry or something less time consuming would work...but not a traditional ferry.

Train Service would be a different story. If they would reinstate full serivce of the current Short line that runs from Tuckahoe to the Cape up to Camden or Philly, similar to the Atlantic City Serivce....I would think it may draw people if the time travel was below 90 minutes ....but only seasonal.

how about a hydrofoil instead of a slow ass car ferry? (there'd be no need for a car ferry from Philly, you'd just drive with your car). any takers?

it takes 90 min to get to AC right now (although if I were NJT I'd ask the casinos for money to add and upgrade track, you really need 60 min and more frequencies if you want people to use the train to get to AC).

I don't know...I once went to Cape May on a holiday weekend and the drive took six hours from Center City thanks to allt he traffic jams. A two-hour train ride would be a big improvement. I can only imagine it would be even more welcome to people who had to spend those six hours trapped in their cars with little kids.

That said, I'm all for the improvements to the AC line that you talk about.

I'm not against it. just thought a boat might be both cheaper (for a seasonal destination) and a bit more fun. (and bring peopel to the waterfront) when I was in Italy we took ferries, they were decently fast. as much as 40 knots I believe. I was just kind of wondering how long it would take, if it would be cheaper than a train, more enjoyable during the summer, etc.
it appears to be roughly 80 miles via river. that woudl be about 2 hours. a train coudl certainly be faster if it were in the right shape. however, 2 hours might be competitive enough.

Problem is there's no transit at the shore so you'd be kinda stuck wherever you ended up.

I'd be for this ...

Jet Boat...

There's a ferry from Boston to Provincetown. The trip takes 90 minutes and cost $44 per person ($69 round trip) and they don't take cars. Driving to PTown is 3 1/2 hours and 120 miles over land, but the ferry route looks about 50 miles over water.

Considering that it's easier to get around P-Town without a car than it is Cape May, I'm not sure if enough people would use a people-only ferry to make it profitable. $69 pp is a lot of money to pay for a day trip or even a weekend trip to the shore. Anything longer than that and you need a car

I remember Cape May being fairly walkable. the price woudl probably have to be half that. Wonder if the prices reflect the cost or the fact that it shaves off so much time (demand). would you take a ferry to cape may? if you woudln't because it's not walkable, would you take a train?

Cape May is walkable, but lord help you if you want to do something just outside of town...

Train from Philly would be a better option. If this option came to pass, Cape May County would have to offer some sort of jitney or transit service within the area to link the different areas together.

Cape May City is pretty walkable. The problem is going to be that the only place to dock the ferry is going to be in North Cape May, a separate town where the current Cape May - Lewes Ferry docks. The City of Cape May is actually on the ocean, not the bay.

The very point of NJ, where the bay meets the ocean is Cape May Point, about 2 miles south of Cape May City. Above the Point are Cape May City on the Atlantic side and North Cape May on the bay side. You can't walk from North Cape May to Cape May City and there's no public transportation that I'm aware of. I imagine you could do a shuttle or jitney service, but that's another problem...

A train would be a good alternative, since there are already tracks into Cape May. It's been decades since trains serviced the city so they probably need some work, but at least the infrastructure is there already.

I wouldn't take train or passenger ferry because we always go to our family's house at the Point and there are no stores within a couple of miles so you need a car. If we were staying the CM City, I'd consider a ferry or train, but only if we were just going for a few days. More than that and we like to branch out to visit the Wildwood or Ocean City boardwalks or the casinos in AC. (Cape May doesn't have a boardwalk.)
