Default Air-Powered Car Coming to U.S., Sub-$18,000 & a Range of 1000 Miles

Air-Powered Car Coming to U.S. in 2009 to 2010 at Sub-$18,000, Could Hit 1000-Mile Range but it won't be American Engineering.

Interesting article. There is so much venture capital right now in alternative energy in grid power and in vehicle power that it is hard to predict what will come out on top. I think if this car is able to be more affordable then the traditional hybrids, then this technology could prevail. I have to say though, they are freaking ugly.

Popular Mechanics really swung and missed with that headline. It's not an air powered car, it's a hybrid using compressed gas as an intermediate power store rather than a battery. It still has a normal engine. There simply isn't enough power in compressed air to run the car for long distances on that alone. I've read that regenerative braking using a pump and compressed air is more efficient than using a generator and batteries. It'll be interesting to see where this goes. It's probably cheaper and more environmentally friendly to produce pumps and air tanks than batteries.

Proof (if you need it) that the solutions to the world's energy problems are probably going to come from rising superpowers India and China, rather than from the US.
