Very surprising. Very saddening. He will be missed.

I definitely disagree with you on that- Russert did his homework, was ALWAYS well prepared for every interview, and did ask challenging questions, not softballs.
The difference is that Russert had a winsome manner about him that was disarming- so he was able to ask tough, probing questions in a way that elicited responses. He was not generally speaking a "gotcha" interviewer, although, he would challenge the person if that was what was appropriate under the circumstances. Russert was well spoken, well educated, as well as thoughtful, thorough and prescient with his political analysis. He had served under Democratic Senator Patrick Moynihan, former NY governor Mario Cuomo, among others, and was definitely a political centrist who challenged both sides. He will be GREATLY missed. ![]()

More than anyone since Lawrence Spivak -- hell, more than Spivak, even -- Russert was Meet the Press.
He singlehandedly made that show a must-watch for political junkies. And he was indeed tough but fair, and evenhanded in an age of increasingly partisan journalism (which, BTW, I do not necessarily consider A Bad Thing). NBC will have an extremely difficult time indeed finding his like again. P.S. Go Bills!

Check out the way he showed David Duke for what he was--or, really, let David Duke show us all who he really was.

There are few heavy hitters left. Although the circumstances are very different, this is like losing Ted Koppel on Nightline. I don't like the so-called contenders inside NBC who are being named as possible replacements. I'll retch if they pick Matthews. Mitchell is not up to the job. Todd is not ready. One of the few people I'm always impressed with is John King at CNN. He's very smart, fast on his feet, and he comes from AP, so he didn't start his journalism career dreaming of being a tee-vee star.
