here's a different, and more pleasant way to spin that: just build in another $15 to the price of every flight, and don't say a thing about it. instead, announce that you will be giving away a $15 voucher to anyone who does not check a bag. when you go to check in, be it on the computer or at a kiosk or at the counter, you would select the "0 bags to check" option and a nice $15 voucher (or check, or cash, whatev) would spit out with your ticket. what do you all think?

I agree. With all the nickel and dimeing they're doing, I think passengers would actually be much happier if they just raised ticket prices instead of charging for a hundred different little things that you can't keep track of anymore.
(In fact, I just googled "nickel and dimeing" to see if it's actually spelled that way, and the fourth result is a Consumerist article on AirTran charging $15 extra for a seat in the emergency exit row.)
