Default Credit Where It's Due - A commentary from an Australian writer defending the U.S.

I had read this the other day and forgot to post it. It was rather poignant because I was just speaking to a friend of mine about this very thing.

The US isn't perfect. There are some things the government has done at times that were wrong (which actions differ based on who you ask). Unfortunately, many outside, and inside, the United States grossly overlooks the amount of charity we do ... at the government level and personal level.

The people of the United States are at their core givers and the actions of our government emulate and portray this. Regardless of the flaws, we really try to be there for others.

It does make me proud that a lot of the views of morality that founded our country and grew with it continue to this day.

I recommend people read this article. I am sure some will want to use it as a stepping stone to express the bad things and wrongs of the country, but that is not the point. The point is to at least take a moment to acknowledge the good the US does.

What a great read. I wish Europe would see it this way more often. We all make mistakes, it takes character to overlook them when there is a greater good.

From the article, which appears in Rupert Murdoch's prestige paper Down Under, Australia's answer to The Times (New York or London) and a loss leader for News Corporation:

Quote:
Indeed, why not break into a standing ovation every now and again? As more US C-130s and helicopters stand waiting on Burma's doorstep, desperate to help a shattered populace and stymied only by an appalling anti-US regime, this is one of those times.
Let's hear it for America.
clapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclap....

Funny thing -- last week, I was reading an essay that argued that had we simply sent a couple of ships towards the Burmese coast back when the people last rose up to demand democracy only to have the junta swat them down again, the outcome might have been different, as it would have emboldened the dissident elements within the Burmese military to side with the people, knowing that the Americans were there to back them up.

Gotta love the rest of the world. Can't live with us, can't live without us.

On balance, this is a great country, no doubt about it.

right here one more! How about for this country to PAY attention to the home problems BEFORE trying to act like a great example.
Education and crime comes to mind.....
that's all for now
