The broad search for information is one issue, but the idea that an institution can be served with one of these "letters" and not be able to discuss is within the organization with the board of directors or discuss it over the phone with a lawyer is even more onerous.

The FBI uses National Security Letters to get information on personal customer records from Internet Service Providers, banks and other financial institutions and organizations. Unlike formal subpoenas, no formal judicial review is required to serve an NSL.
If anyone is not at least a little bit afraid of the federal gov't, they don't realize how scary it can be.

The FBI single handedly repealed the 4th amendment and told the people they persecuted under that repeal thay they couldn't tell anyone what the FBI was up to. And this will make us all safer!?

I'll take my chances with the terrorists. There aren't really that many because admittedly the feds are doing a very good job ferreting them out through other lawful means (that don't require allowing the feds to use the Constitution as something they wipe their asses with). I've got plenty of ammo to deal with any leftover terrorists.
