Unfortunately, people either deliberately or unknowingly equate criticism of Israel and it's controversial policies with respect to it's treatment of Palestinians (terrorists to some) as an attack on the religion of Judaism itself. It's understandable that Jews would emotionalize rather than rationalize the criticism because of the holocaust legacy....

I'm particularly not a fan of the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and his views/support for the War in Iraq and other policies but if somebody absurdly suggested I was anti-Italian , a self hating Italian or a self hating-catholic/Italian as a result, I would have to laugh in their face.
