good, positive story for Philly. But at the end of the day, the city has to ensure good jobs are available for college grads by becoming more business-friendly and competitive (read: cut taxes and improve basic services!) with not only surrounding areas but with other major cities.

This paragraph is from the same article:

Quote:
While housing availability is important to new grads, so too is the opportunity to participate in key industries. The list of top cities includes some usual suspects — Boston, a hub for research and academia; New York, the financial and media capital; Dallas and Houston, where energy and big business thrive.
I'm telling you... Philly needs to compete to bring more HQ's and offices and industry to itself. The recent merger of Coors with MillerSAB led to the combined company wanting to move... Philly's cheerleader-in-chief should've taken the first flight out to meet the execs and sell the city to them. That's why other mayors do. Mayor Tom Leppert of Dallas is currently in China, drumming up support for more direct flights between DFW Airport and various Chinese cities. I'm sure Philly does such things too, but the success in attracting new jobs are far from obvious. Or I'm not informed about major new jobs moving into town; I'm aware of that software company moving back to CC from a suburb.

One thing that's less articulated is Philly area's still big on high-tech manufacturing, such as for aerospace industry (There's TGI Industries in Wayne, and Ametek in Paoli, for two examples right there). Also, a company like Urban Outfitters should be a "flagship" of the town, using them to attract more of those fashion design and high culture type jobs...young folks love those...! hehe

Just the kind of press this city needs. After "The Next Great American City" stuff, we've had a bit of a dry spell to say the least.

I keep saying that with Philadelphia's location between NYC and DC, there is no reason for the city to be lagging behind places like Houston and Charlotte. It gives me hope to see people starting to realize how unique Philly's location, history, infrastructure and culture are.

Philadelphia can start by luring large Asian and European companies to the city to house their US headquarters. The city has more in common with cities in those parts of the world than do Phoenix and Atlanta, making it a good sell - if we had someone to make the pitch that is. Street was not able to; I think Nutter or someone on his team can work with the Chamber of Commerce and Rendell to do that.

The Nutter administration is moving in the right direction.

I've always thought the Philadelphia area was one of the best in the nation. The only problem? The punitive wage tax!
Also, the business taxes are horrific. When I worked for myself in the city, I paid:
1) Gross receipts tax -- you're taxed on the check your clients give you.
2) Net profits tax -- next, you're taxed on the percentage of the check you keep.
3) Business privilege tax -- you're taxed for the "privilege" of doing business in Philly.
4) Wage tax -- you're taxed because you live and/or work in the city.

FOUR TAXES ON THE SAME DOLLAR!!!!! And that's before the state and federal government get their greedy little paws on your money.

And the Democrats running Philly keep wondering why they can't attract more businesses, and why so many businesses leave the moment their tax abatement expires.

Well, as I was noting upthread, the mayor of Dallas is visiting China, and apparently he brought along a delegation of Dallas-based business leaders.

And now they have lured in a new Chinese company to set up shop, er, their North American HQ, in Dallas. ZTE Corp is one of the biggest Chinese telecom companies, so its no small fish. This could likely lead to more Chinese companies coming to Dallas. Sucks. I would rather see them in Philly.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...ae0b9.html?npc

Quote:
SHENZHEN, China – A major Chinese telecommunications company will establish its U.S. headquarters in Dallas, a move city officials hail as both significant in its own right and a catalyst for future Chinese investment.
....

Said Ron Natinsky, the Dallas City Council’s economic development committee chairman: “Like an oyster, you get one inside, and you grow a pearl around it. This will be a catalyst to other Chinese investment in Dallas."

City Hall has for months quietly courted ZTE, further solidifying its ties with the company by last week pre-emptively approving a $192,000 tax abatement package for a then unspecified development.

The ZTE deal gives Dallas officials tangible results from its recent efforts to attract high-profile Chinese investment, which the officials consider essential to the city’s future economic vitality.
“And if we can leverage this,” Mr. Leppert said, “you’ll see a number of investments from China following to Dallas.”

The ZTE headquarters will be located at 18325 Waterview Parkway and initially occupy 21,000 square feet of space. ZTE specializes in a variety of telecommunications products, such as mobile phones and other wireless communications, and employs about 49,000 people worldwide.

Philly leaders need to stop squabbling among themselves and stop their "my neighborhood versus yours" attitude and take a bigger view and go compete to get new business in Philly. I see Ed Rendell doing some of this for the state, but the city needs to figure out how to bring in new corporates.

If you were paying the Business Privilege taxes, you should not have been paying the wage tax as well--not on the same income. Double check with your accountant on this information.

Please note--you only pay the Business Privilege taxes, which are comprised of TWO, Gross Receipts and Net Profits taxes, if you are a business owner or independent contractor, in short, NOT an employee of another company. If you are an employee, you are only responsible for City Wage Tax. You don't pay four separate taxes to the City, in the way you have enumerated.
