good, positive story for Philly. But at the end of the day, the city has to ensure good jobs are available for college grads by becoming more business-friendly and competitive (read: cut taxes and improve basic services!) with not only surrounding areas but with other major cities.
This paragraph is from the same article: Quote:
One thing that's less articulated is Philly area's still big on high-tech manufacturing, such as for aerospace industry (There's TGI Industries in Wayne, and Ametek in Paoli, for two examples right there). Also, a company like Urban Outfitters should be a "flagship" of the town, using them to attract more of those fashion design and high culture type jobs...young folks love those...! hehe

I've always thought the Philadelphia area was one of the best in the nation. The only problem? The punitive wage tax!
Also, the business taxes are horrific. When I worked for myself in the city, I paid: 1) Gross receipts tax -- you're taxed on the check your clients give you. 2) Net profits tax -- next, you're taxed on the percentage of the check you keep. 3) Business privilege tax -- you're taxed for the "privilege" of doing business in Philly. 4) Wage tax -- you're taxed because you live and/or work in the city. FOUR TAXES ON THE SAME DOLLAR!!!!! And that's before the state and federal government get their greedy little paws on your money. And the Democrats running Philly keep wondering why they can't attract more businesses, and why so many businesses leave the moment their tax abatement expires.

Well, as I was noting upthread, the mayor of Dallas is visiting China, and apparently he brought along a delegation of Dallas-based business leaders.
And now they have lured in a new Chinese company to set up shop, er, their North American HQ, in Dallas. ZTE Corp is one of the biggest Chinese telecom companies, so its no small fish. This could likely lead to more Chinese companies coming to Dallas. Sucks. I would rather see them in Philly. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...ae0b9.html?npc Quote:
Philly leaders need to stop squabbling among themselves and stop their "my neighborhood versus yours" attitude and take a bigger view and go compete to get new business in Philly. I see Ed Rendell doing some of this for the state, but the city needs to figure out how to bring in new corporates.

If you were paying the Business Privilege taxes, you should not have been paying the wage tax as well--not on the same income. Double check with your accountant on this information.

Please note--you only pay the Business Privilege taxes, which are comprised of TWO, Gross Receipts and Net Profits taxes, if you are a business owner or independent contractor, in short, NOT an employee of another company. If you are an employee, you are only responsible for City Wage Tax. You don't pay four separate taxes to the City, in the way you have enumerated.
