Yes, however 2007 saw a near-record low murder rate for LA - less than 400 it seems. We had about the same total number as LA, despite the fact that Philly is a fraction of the size of LA.

It looks like LA's rate is on an upswing this year, though.

All I was pointing out is that despite their gang situation being out of control, we still appear to have a much higher per-capita murder rate for whatever reason. That may no longer be the case going forward, however, if they continue to increase while we continue to decline (hopefully).

The thing is, is it's NOT one city. It's about 15. It's mostly one county. The gangs operate in the LA basin area which stretches from the San Fernando Valley (home of "Valley girls") east to San Bernardino County, and south to the northern area of Orange County. LA city proper is really not that big. When they're counting 80,000 gang members they're counting Torrance, Compton, LA, Long Beach, Carson, Reseda, Santa Monica, Pomona, El Segundo, etc.

HG is right. The comparison isn't fair to Philly at all.

That's all part of why I stopped watching tv news. I could note more than one
occasion when I knew they were lying( I knew what the real facts were) and just couldn't take it anymore.

But still, for those who watch this local crap, what can we do to get these
fools to stop? Stop sensationalizing. Stop lying. Stop making situations worse
than they really are. They are a DISASTER for this city and they need
to be told so.

The fact that the bulk of them are inter-changable bubbleheads, who go from
tv market to tv market, makes it more infuriating because they have *nothing*
invested in the people and institutions of this area. So they trash, burn and leave.
A$$holes!

Some idiot rhymed Philadelphia for entertainment purposes, and our really not that bad of a city gets trashed. To the point that people write in the city database that killbillrain posted a thread about, where they fear for their lives or are ridiculed by friends for coming here, and then they're here, realize that it's really rather nice. But, no, we're the ones with a major problem, no one else!

It's time to step back and reassess issues in this country; it isn't one city only--there are lots of them.

I agree,, his voice is as appealling as watching grass grow. Slow, droning and monotone.
