Of course they're doing it for their image. But it's also a good thing. Once again, it's possible to be more than black and white.

Personally, I sent body armor through www.anysoldier.com last year and I'll probably send more again this year. I have several friends who have served in Iraq and who are going back again. They appreciate these kinds of efforts. Please stop trying to talk people out of it. If you don't want to do it, don't. But stop condemning everyone else, please.
Well said.

I can thank a soldier through a card and still tell Bush to kiss my booty and get the troops home (perhaps, not in that order).

What if there are a few soldiers on base not getting any of these cards? Wouldn't that suck for them to be 20 of 2,000 because not enough people cared to take 30 seconds to send a free card online? I voted my protest to the war, I don't need to voice it to a soldier knee-deep in the sh*t.
And well said.

I wish they had a card that, instead of Thank you, said something like "I'm sorry that your life has to be in danger because of this president's adminitration's lies & I pray for your safety during this unnecessary war"
I apologize if I offended anyone - this was not me pushing an agenda... I just wanted to say my heart goes out to them as they put their lives on the line over a bunch of lies; I pray for their well being and safe return home; I truly feel compassion for them.

Thank anyone you please in private. If you don't know anyone, probably someone you know does. The main, lasting effect of these high-visibility thank-the-troops gimmicks is to hand the government a tool to shape thinking about future foolishness: "War is about thanking the troops and never, never asking what the &*#@ they're up to."
To quote others, "Well said."

Default More people to thank

Again, thank whom you please. But while thanking those whose "service" was to give Bush their skills, bodies and lives to use as he pleased, think about also thanking those who opposed the Iraq war from the get-go.

Thank-you notes should go to the 133 representatives and 23 senators who voted "no" on Joint Resolution 114 on Oct. 11, 2002, giving Bush authority to invade. Smart members of the Pennsylvania delegation included Rep. Robert Brady, Rep. William Coyne, Rep. Mike Doyle and Rep. Chaka Fattah.

Get the full list here: http://usliberals.about.com/od/liber...aqNayVote.htm#

Outside the government, there were lots of organizations and individuals whose advice was ignored by the Bush administration. A few are listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opposition_to_the_Iraq_War.

You'll have to do this on your own, though. To my knowledge, nobody has organized a thank-the-war-opponents campaign. (Gee, I wonder why?)

If you go to this web site, www.letssaythanks.com , you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!!

I bumped this to help avoid Ms. MarkeDixon's continued disruption of it's intended purpose.

You and I essentially agree on everything you just posted. I have thanked many of the folks who stood in opposition. Then and now. Actually, there were some very organized thank-you campaigns to elected officials. Thank you's sent to the men and women who tried to stand up to this administration while having their patriotism and character harshly questioned. "Lefty-groups" organized these campaigns.

Count me as one who saw this as a catastrophe in the making from the moment Bush took office... the writing was on the wall from day one. Evidence be damned.

HOWEVER

I'm willing to accept that this one thread is about one thing only. I see absolutely nothing wrong with keeping my politics away from this one little thread on this one little forum...

If there is the slightest possibility one of these post cards could make the slightest difference to one person, it cost me nothing to send it, and the 30 second effort was worth it. Corporate PR campaign or not.

This is one issue where we could all afford to agree and build a little good will around here.

I do. Two reasons.

First, "politics" is a good thing. In fact, the main alternative to shooting. Long live politics.

Second, the idea that thanking the military -- collectively and severally -- should be above politics is to declare to declare the military sacrosanct. This is an expression and symptom of militarism. More than one administration has shown itself capable and eager to use the nation's uncritical view of the military to sell its war-du-jour.

I say that we should deprive politicians of that tool.
