Default "Racist filth?" Oh, Canada...

Learn how to take a joke, you hosers!

A friend of mine has been in Toronto during all this and she said the media has gone completely bonkers about it.

P.S. Aren't Conan O'Brien, Robert Smigel (Triumph's puppeteer) and most Quebec citizens white? Where's the racism?

Conan O'Brien apologizes to Canadians
Show had sicced Triumph on Quebecois

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Late-night comedian Conan O'Brien sought to defuse a flap over a recent segment poking fun at the French-Canadian province of Quebec by issuing a self-deprecating "apology" on Tuesday in French.

"People of Quebec, I'm sorry," the host of NBC's "Late Night" show said in English, as a translator recited in French, with English subtitles, "People of Quebec, I'm an albino jackass."

"We meant no harm with our comedy piece the other night," O'Brien continued, "translated" into French as: "The other night, I wet the bed like a little girl."

"I was a stranger in a strange land and I was very insensitive," he went on, with the subtitle: "I have a small penis."

The tongue-in-cheek mea culpa was delivered by O'Brien after his usual monologue during the taping of Tuesday night's show in New York.

O'Brien sparked a burst of outrage from the Canadian government last Thursday with a segment in which a rubber hand-puppet known as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, a recurring character on the show, said to a Quebecer: "You're French, you're obnoxious and you no speekay English." The ribald puppet told another: "I can smell your crotch from here."

The controversial segment came during O'Brien's highly publicized road trip last week for a series of shows taped in and around Toronto to help boost that city's profile in the wake of last year's deadly SARS outbreak.

But members of the federal government in Ottawa said O'Brien's jokes about Quebec, a province which has had separatist governments for much of the last 20 years and is a delicate political topic in Canada, went too far.

Alexa McDonough, a legislator for the left-leaning New Democratic Party, described the program as "racist filth" and "utterly vile." She demanded the government seek the return of the C$1 million ($760,000) subsidy paid by Ontario, the province of which Toronto is the capital, to General Electric Co.'s NBC network to help bring O'Brien's show to Canada.

Racist? Huh?

Canadians are far too uptight. I briefly dated a Canadian...I had to listen to his sister talk about how pompous and aloof Americans are...how they don't know anything about Canadian culture and basically name call all day long. Finally I said to her, "True, we do have a lot of Canadian jokes. But you're lucky we regard you at all."

Especially French Canadians. The French hate them and so do the rest of the Canadians.

My favorite Canada joke is from The Simpsons. When asked if he'd be interested in going to Canada, Homer replied, "Why would I want to leave America to go to America Junior?"

I watched several of the Conan episodes in Toronto last week. Man, those Canadians in the audience were pathetic. They went completely nuts at any mention of Canada or the Maple Leafs (which, by the way, should be "Maple Leaves," shouldn't it?). Soooo desperate for attention. How sad.

And, for all the Canada "bashing," there was also plenty in the other direction. I liked the bit with Jim Carrey becoming a US citizen, then renouncing it and chewing up his US passport: "It tastes like... manifest destiny!"

Is Canada still there? They can barely support a hockey franchise, much less a country.

I'd say the Canadians have a lot of pent up pissiness b/c we're such an obnoxious neighbor. I used to travel to Toronto very frequently for work, and an example I found telling was when US planes in Afghanistan accidentally bombed a Canandian training camp and killed 6 or so Canadians - it was outrageous that our government refused to admit any fault even though it was obvious that our Top-Gun trigger-happy pilots mistargeted and did not follow protocol for acquiring targets. Reminded me of the time when some idiotic joy-riding American pilots in Italy severed the cables in a gondola transporting 20 or more Italians, b/c the pilots wanted to "go below the hard deck" to quote Top Gun. They were criminally prosecuted if I recall, but it is no coincidence that we have perceptions of being obnoxious b/c of these types of issues. How about target practice in Puerto Rico and Okinawa in backyards of natives? Other examples of obnoxious behavior that leads to pent up feelings of animosity.

Anyone see Bowling for Columbine?

I love Canada but I've only been to Quebec. Of course I like France too.

I'm actually willing to have my taxes pay to send Americans that are ashamed to be Americans to Canada or France or whereever they want to go.
