Where in our area can you get old fashioned hand-dipped ice cream cones? I'm all nastaligic for one!

Rita's and Dairy Queen's do not, at all, cut it.

Dairy Land up on the Ridge (5420 Ridge Ave) has soft-serve and hand-dipped ice cream. They serve just about any combination you can imagine. Some folks swear by the Blizzardo (like dq's blizzard), some the Chocolate Malted, some the sundaes - they're all good. I had a ss vanilla cone with "peanut brittle" coating just last night.

they have drive through and counter service.

The only place I know of is in Chestnut Hill @ Bredenbeck's. They have Bassett's and Hagaan Daaz (sp?). Sometimes they have Shanna's which is a small local company.

Default Ice Cream Shops

Shanna had an ice cream shop in Hatboro a few years ago. Her ice cream was home-made. She closed the store. Our town has a Dairy Queen. All the Huntingdon Valley locals frequent it.

Guy opened a nice shop on Midvale Ave, just off of Ridge near Manana's called "The Cherry Bean Cafe". Had all hand-dipped ice-creams, and fresh pies from Melrose Diner, and good coffee.

His space was fit-out real nice and comfortable.

But nobody much cared and he went out of business in one summer.

There's a great little old time ice cream shop on Henry Ave, just north of Walnut Ln. I believe its on the corner about 2 blocks past Chubby's, across from the golf course. The name escapes me right now.

Or if you're willing to drive a little further, the Trolley Car Diner on Germantown ave in Mt.Airy/Chestnut Hill just opened Trolley Car Ice Cream on the same premise. The ice cream shop is actually inside a rehabbed PTC trolley car! It looks really cool. Apparently there is a surplus of historic trolley cars since SEPTA won't be needing them for route 15 (sic).

The East Falls guy (Cherry Bean Cafe) was a local EF dude, fairly young and was thinking that he wanted to be a part of the EF "resurgence". I spoke to him and he wanted to make it work in EF. He really did have the right idea though; he had fresh pies brought in daily from the Melrose, and all kinds of coffees and Basset's Ice Cream. Nice environment too, inside/outside eating if you liked.

Unfortunately, EF is not that sort of town yet. Not enough foot traffic and no place to park at all, (you think Manayunk has problems? you don't know what a parking problem is until you've seen Midvale and Ridge).

(It didn't help that he opened in October as I recall).

I thought he had homemade ice cream. I may get flamed for this but Bassett's is overrated. It's just not that good. There's a place in DC called Max's best. makes his own ice cream and waffle cones..effin amazing. Chilly Phily is pretty tasty but they are hard to find and have only one flavor.
