Default Recommendations Please......Thanks!

I have a friend who refuses to cook or even try. He doesn't even own any pots or pans. He prefers to go broke getting take-out food practically every night.

He will be moving to our area on June 1st, and has asked me for a list of some great take-out food places for the following:

Good basic Italian food (not fancy)
burger (big & juicy kind - definitely not McDonalds)
cheesesteak -
steak - (other kind...the kind you eat with a knife and fork)
chicken -
sandwiches-
Chinese food-
seafood (again, nothing fancy)

I told him about Tommy Gunn's for a change of pace, and D'Allesandro's for a cheesesteak.

He is restricted from eating anything real super spicy (No Mexican or Cajun). And he ONLY wants take-out because he does most of his eating alone, and doesn't want to sit in a restaurant alone.

Can anyone help?????

Thanks!!!!

Good burger: Dawson St. Pub, they do takeout, and their fries and that spicy mustard stuff is awesome! It's not cheap everyday burger, though, it's about $5-6. Some of the Main St. restaurants also have big, juicy burgers.

sandwiches - you can check out that best hoagie thread that showed up a couple days ago... good ideas in there. Barry's is decent, Sorrentino's down on Cresson & Levering is good, lots of other ideas in the hoagie thread, and then there's always Wawa for the people who just want something simple.

Chinese food -- don't know, I used to like getting takeout from Jade Court but some folks don't like that place. It was 1000x better than the takeout on Silverwood by Green Lane though! Now that I live close to Chinatown I'm spoiled. There's somewhere in Andorra that's pretty decent, it's up above the shopping center, can't remember the name but they had the best mango-peach shrimp ever.
Is that Chinese takeout place in Domino Lane shopping center still open?

Cheese steaks - I like Barry's and Chubby's. But everyone has their preferences.

basic Italian - ?
but Bella Trattoria is pretty good (down on Main) and reasonably priced for a restaurant and they do takeout. Not sure what the budget would be though...

Pizza - Alex's is pretty decent, except on a Friday... when it's still good but the wait is forever.

My parents ate at "On the Rox" and they dug it. They probably do takeout.

I wouldn't mind hearing other people's opinions on this as I'll be moving back to the Rox in June...

I second Dawson's on the burgers.... Yum! I also like Coyles for burgers. They do a great "black and blue burger". My favorite burgers in the hood are at the Ugly Moose on Shurs Lane.

For sandwiches, as mentioned before, I love Mia's (Manayunk and Ridge Ave) - best hoagies in the area. Also good are Lenny's hoagies.

Best pizza IMO is Alex' Pizza - take out only, no delivery. Also good is Mom's Bake at Home on Main Street.

Best Chinese is Beijing Garden. I don't like Jade Palace at all. Personal preference.

If your friend doesn't like spicy, that shouldn't preclude Mexican. Adobe does some great "nonspicy" dishes. Tell your friend to check it out.

Best cheesesteak is Chubby's, hands down.

For Italian, try Casselli's. Huge portions (good for leftovers), yummy food. As posted elsewhere on the blog, I like the lounge singer, some folks don't care for it.

Also good is Stonewell, which is Japanese and Korean - near Conshy on Ridge Pike.

Hope that helps!

Ridgeway-Pizza(roxborough's pizza slection is surpirsinglow on quality given the amount of pizza joints around))
Cheesesteak-Chubby's or Sorrentino's
Burger-haven't had a great burger here yet and I've eaten at every place mentioned (Dawson's and moose). Moose might have the edge though.
Seafood takeout-Jack's
Actually, burgers, during the summer months hit the tent down on main st. their sausages and burgers are pretty good.
Casselli's-never been. but if you are going to drive that far head up to mt. airy where they know how to serve good sandwiches to mcmenamin's.
Chinese food-there is no good chinese, find something that meets your standards.
Best takeout-Angelo & Josepehines-whether it's chicken salad or a meatball sub. their stuff is pretty good.
I found Bella Trattoria to be underwhelming. The other Italilan place sells smaller portions for half price. can't think of th ename.
Disclaimer-I've sought help but may be considered a foodie.

Yes and yes.

They also have a great lunchbox menu. I recommend the bulgogi.

I second that vote for Ridgeway Pizza. I think it's the best in the neighborhood. And their gyros, etc., are also good. Many a late work-night when I've been exhausted, cold, and wanting hot food that's not fast food I have been grateful for their existence, believe me! They do both takeout and delivery, by the way.

I have been to Casselli's once when I first moved here. It was cute and I recall the food being pretty decent.

Angelo & Josephine's is a neat place.

Beijing Garden is decent Chinese takeout. And I've had Jade Court before, and it was good, though I know some people here don't like it.

If you go as far as the Andorra shopping center, there are several independent places and a couple of chains like Moe's and the soon-to-open Applebees.

your opinion...

Moe's doesn't make me have to (pardon my phrasing) "RUN FOR THE BORDER!" about 15-20 minutes after eating like taco bell. But I suppose that could be seen as an advantage for some
