Its great to hear about you heritage in this neighborhood. There are still a lot people like your family around. My next-door neighbor is a woman in her 80s, who probably lived in the house her whole life. In fact, I was having some concrete work done in my backyard, and she came out and told me about how her mother helped build the old concrete steps that were on my property. It made me think about the old times, and how neighbors worked together on their homes. Especially if they are ajoining homes.

Yup our neighborhood was like that too - the one I live in now is like that ... which is probably the reason I'm here! (chuckle)

Default Thank you, Thank you

Well i just wasted an hour at work typing out all my thoughts about the area; sadly my computer crashed and now I'm bitter.

Anyway, for the last two months I've been looking at properties in Myunk/Rox. Put a bid on one home on Smick, turned out it had extensive termite damage; luckily i had a contengency. (I'm told this is not uncommon)

Anyway I think I have seen EVERYTHING in Myunk/Rox; but have yet to venture to East Falls. How does one get there? Down Main St. Left on Ridge? Is it possible I was in East Falls and didn't even know it?

Does anyone out there current live in E.F? and care to share their thoughts? I'd love to be able to cycle from there to CC, doable?

Thanks to all of you for your information; especially lawmummy for sparking this conversation; it really helps some of us who are not from the area.

cheers!

to get to East Falls you can either take Henry Avenue - down past School House Lane (just a side note the white house at the corner of School House Lane and Henry Avenue is where Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner were married). Or you can take Ridge avenue straight down and under the bridge past the falls. I don't know too much about East Falls these days haven't been there in years!

As for the termite damage in the house on Smick. Not surprising. Most of the row houses (otherwise known as the "blocks") were built for the Mill workers and some have been there since the early 1800's. Termites are bad - but sheesh I remember the size of the cockroaches in our house on Smick Street - in fact my significant other at the time came home one night to see me in front of the refrigerator with the door open talking to a roach - saying look take what you want anything you want just take it and go back into the wall!

There is local legend that Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner were married in this house. Actually, Frank and Ava were married at 506 W Springer St. in West Mount Airy in November of 1951

Well that's good to know - not having been born until '58 I wasn't invited there either - LOL!

Might have been referring to the 19127 zip (Manayunk) w/ 19128 (Rox)
I know from personal experience that the zip at Terrace & East St. (only on the north side of the street) is 19128 - which is odd, and caused much confusion in getting mail. There was one postman who'd deliver mail across the street, then later another (who had the 19128 zip ) would deliver to my side.
:deal?:

I had a prospective tenant put a deposit on a house on the 300 block of Pensdale last year. She and a friend moved in and then asked to break their lease and get their deposit back. They were horrified to be in 19128, they wanted 19127. I offered to reimburse them for a Manayunk Post Office box. They stayed. Kinda like LA show zip code thing.

Default Schuylkill Valley Nature Center

I had heard they were selling off like 22 acres in 2004 - did this ever go through?
