This morning I was enjoying my morning walk with my 6 month old puppy. We were walking down Kingsley St & Mitchell St. (the block that is the back of Ugly Moose and Auto Garages). This is our normal route, and she has met lots of friendly dogs on her walks.
I heard an aggressive dog barking not soon after turning off Mitchell onto Kingsley. So we decided to cross the street to the other side. The barking dog pushed his way out of the gate and charged at us with his teeth showing. I scooped up my puppy and fended off the dog. We were in the middle of the street. He/she came barreling at us and kept trying to attack my dog. I was able to fend him off, but he was persistent. I was crying out to get him off of me. The owner of the dog came running out and was able to control the dog; although, she seemed very passive compared to her aggressive German Shepherd. Our puppy is fine, and seemed okay about it. My arm is all bruised and scratched, no bites luckily. A neighbor in a car across the street asked if we were all okay. She also told me lots of other people are afraid of this dog. I posting this because this dog was very strong, I am in good shape…. I would be fearful of this happening to a child… so please let people know about the location… one block down from 7-11. I guess the house front would be on Naomi St. I also don’t want one bad dog to ruin the reputation of such a dog friendly neighborhood. I think the owners just need a better fence and more authority over their dog. Thanks… |

Wow, the brevity in which you've summarized dog ownership is almost as impressive as your judgementalism.... |

I got spooked by another large dog on another street (I think it was either Mitchell or Pechin somewhere between Roxborough and Lyceum -- it was a few weeks ago, so I'm not sure) He barked at me and startled me a little, but he also looked he could possibly have come over the fence if his owner hadn't called him down; his paws reached the top. I don't know if he really could have gotten out, but I just wanted to let you know it may not be the only dog in the area who could get out. Not trying to be alarmist. I just wonder if the owners of these big dogs have thought about possible liablity issues if someone should get hurt. I know little dogs can also be aggressive -- I'm just talking about fencing responsibilities.

You really should report this person to animal control. I am a dog lover. This is a dog owner problem. I used to have a large german shepherd, and it is a responsibility not everyone is up to.
As for NewYuck's post: Wow. Just when I forget how stupid and unnecessary some people are, I see a post that reminds me.

I do really think this is an owner problem not the dog necessarily. A sturdy fence and gate would solve a major part of the problem. I think with proper discipline and training, I bet this dog would be okay. Is there a way for me to maybe report the fence being faulty? I would hate to get animal control involved if a good fence would solve the issues.

No, I wouldn't call animal control. You wouldn't want them to put the dog down or anything. If you would feel comfortable talking to the owner, that might be a good idea. Do you know anyone who lives on the owner's block? If so, maybe they can tell you if this is a chronic problem and whether the owner is a reasonable person. If you do talk to the owner, maybe you could couch it in terms of being concerned for the DOG -- like having it get out and be hit by a car or getting into an incident and having animal control called. Position yourself as a dog lover and maybe that will get you somewhere. (Or not. Some people just don't get what it means to really be a responsible dog owner, but it's worth a try.)
