not sure I've ever seen a carton of milk that is 1/3 gallon, but I've bought Horizon Organic 1/2 gallon for $3.49 at Superfresh recently. They also sell a different brand for $3.99.

I meant 1/2 gallon--typo. $3.49 for 1/2 gallon of Horizon isn't too bad. But since I'll be at ShopRite anyway, I'd rather not do the trip to Superfresh only for milk, and everything else is way more expensive there so not really worth it for regular shopping (unless something's changed a lot in the last six months or so since I was last there...)

For produce it's Produce Junction in Overbrook once or twice a week for me! I'm a fruit addict and just chop up and freeze what I can't use quickly enough. Well worth the trip. I don't bother with fruit/veggies at the supermarket unless I'm in a pinch.

SuperFresh's weekly specials are usually pretty good now, even though in general they are a lot more expensive than ShopRite. Plus SuperFresh gives 5% discount on Wednesday to 55 and over, so sometimes if there is a good sale, you have a coupon and are able to get the discount, you can make out pretty well. You just have to scour the circulars and compare prices. Since SR and Sf are so close to each other, it's not much of a hassle to go to one store for some things and the other for others. I am very close to both stores. I realize that some posters may find it inconvenient, just as I find going to Acme not worth my time and gas!

I would still have to drive to this "walkable" little village you envision. I also like the fact that Andorra becomes a ghost town at night. It is one of the reasons I moved up here from South Philly 14 years ago. No gun shots, muggings, etc.. To each their own.

Whatever.

I shop at the Acme in Roxborough too and am not trash either, Debbie. I never said anything about "lower neighborhoods". The supermarket itself is cramped and doesn't look that clean, plus the people I've seen there are pushy, rude and loud, aka trashy in my book. I'd rather go to Superfresh, have more room, and not get bumped into without an 'excuse me.'

As for old and slow, I also wasn't being mean about it, just stating a fact that when i go there a lot of the shoppers are elderly and move slowly. Old does not equal slow, and I HOPE that I can be fortunate enough to grow old some day.

But like usual people on phillyblog are going to be super-sensitive about harmless remarks.

ACME doesn't have a store brand of organic milk (the only kind we use), and Horizon is crazy expensive (over $4 for 1/3 gallon last time I was there). It's actually cheaper at ShopRite ($6.50ish for a whole gallon) and Genuardi's ($5/gallon when on sale).

I really miss my old grocery stores in Chicago. Nothing compares...I loved Domenick's...[sigh]...
I agree -I miss Dominick's, too!

I believe Dominick's, Giant, and Genaurdi's are under the same corporation just like ACME and Jewel.
