With all of the changes happening on Ridge, it would be nice to see these eyesores fall into the ground. They are grotesque inside and out. Family Dollar is a dollar store in which very few things cost a dollar. The place is run down, dirty, and blares rap music from a small radio in the front of the store. I realize I am part of the problem by even entering the place. Has anyone here actually sat and had a drink at Peck's? Does that check cashing place next door really do that well?

I had a cocktail in peck millers 7 years ago and will never return I love the fact that ace financial hangs there banners all over the place, sells t shirts and caps in the front windows, and looks cheesey....very lame family dollar is a dump |

Ace sells tokens, Trans and Trailpasses. It's about the only place in Roxborough/Manayunk that does. There are always people in Ace, so apparently it does well. There are plenty of stores that I don't like but I'm not on here saying they should be torn down. Last edited by Debbie1125 : 05-23-2008 at 09:47 PM. |

Peck Miller's is old-school Roxborough. There aren't many places like that remaining. |

Boy, I learn something new everyday. Here I thought the world revolved around the sun. Apparently it revolves around Howard100.
The dollar store must go, along with the check cashing place. They are not up to Howard's standard. And heaven forbid, a local, neighborhood, corner bar, employing a few locals, serving a few locals, how dare they! Ridge Avenue must conform to me, I paid over a quarter million for my house and you will do as I say, I am here now and you will listen. ![]()

In short; you are not the only person to live in the area; they call it a neighbor-hood. You saw the beauty and decided to live here continue to look at the positives and you will recognize others have the right to live and do business as well as yourself. Talk to them explain that if they improve the place the enhanced beauty will attract more customers, who knows it might work, if not you can always do the ham-handed legal approach. |

One reason that Family Dollar is not as neat as you might like it is they don't have enough employees.... just like Kohl's . The Manager in Famiy Dollar is a woman named Donna who is nice and easy to deal with. I had a return recently and she exchanged the item without any problem....try doing that at some of the stores where they can hardly speak english. Family Dollar also recently began selling milk and eggs so STOP OVER PAYING at the 7-11. I also found the milk less expensive than Acme. I only priced it there once. As for Ace Check Cashing....at times I use money orders and they provide them at NO CHARGE. A money order at the nearby Citizens Bank is about $2.00 . These two businesses serve a purpose for us here. Did anyone notice that up from Family Dollar the second hand store SECOND EXPRESSIONS has closed ? The store-owner there, Joyce, has retired. I believe she was there for fourteen years. She always had a little stand ouside with books and toys. A friend of mine donated about twenty dresses to Joyce about a year ago. Beautiful dresses that my friend paid over a hundred dollrs for (each)...Joyce was selling for just ten bucks. A couple of months ago I was in there and there was no heat. She said the heater was broken; Joyce was wearing three coats from her own stock. For those who don't know, Joyce was a restaurant owner for over twenty years near Jefferson Hospital in center city. GOOD-BY JOYCE....Good Health to you in your retirement.....we will miss you ! |
