I feel your pain Howard. I moved to Roxborough honestly because I was a few bucks shy of being able to get my dream home in Manayunk. I hope to see continued development in the area and watch these establishments being replaced with more presentable businesses to keep the home values rising.
I went to Peck Miller's twice and it's a few yocals with mullets. Dollar stores are not needed in any town in my opinion. Roxborough has potential and I understand the feelings of people who have lived here their whole life. Unfortunately Roxborough will never change from my experiences here. |

Hey, I'm a professional with an advanced degree and I happen to like having a few dollar stores around. I spent enough time as a starving student to know that they have a purpose in this world. I still drop into them from time to time to get deals. There's lots of good development happening on Ridge right now. There's no reason to be upset about the dollar stores sharing the space -- they're better than empty storefronts!

I remember Clover's and Woolworth! The best stores! I would take them ANYDAY over any of these dollar stores! I also miss the old food store that used to be in the Family Dollar. (Save-way?) I think? That was the best! I remember as a kid walking up there with my grandother! and haveing lunch in Woolworths as a treat on Saturday or Sunday! Those were the days!

If Roxborough developement corp. wants to bring a more gentrified shopping district to Ridge Avenue then we need to limit certain shops such as the dollar stores, check cashing etc, otherwise there won't be an attraction for higher caliber businesses to move onto Ridge Avenue.
If you want to go to the dollar store you have one at Ivy Ridge and another one at Andorra....2 is enough in a local setting. |

this is a working class neighborhood. we need regular stores. not everyone can afford to use a bank, not shop at a dollar store and buy a 4 dollar cup of coffee. just give us something new we could use. not another hair salon.

I agree. The old places that serve a purpose help the Ridge Ave corridor and what we need to be concerned with is filling in the EMPTY spots with new, cool, useful and interesting businesss, NOT driving out those which have been doing well here for years. It's all good for everyone if we keep all the storefronts open and filled with a diverse selection of options for the neighborhood.

I agree that this is a working class neighborhood, but I do not understand why people think it costs so much to use a bank. I have been using a bank for free for years, maybe some banks have minimum balances, but i think most offer at least free checking accounts.

banks do charge alot of hidden fees, some charge you for every check. not to mention money orders are free at the check cashing place. and you can pay your bills there. it's a great little convience for our neighborhood. it really is. the dollar store is great. they have the best prices on laundry detergent. a little dirt never hurt anyone. maybe if they hired local things would be different.
