Smile A Transplant with Some Questions

My husband & I are moving to Philly, East Falls in particular. We have a few questions for you well informed East Fallians (??)
 • We have two dogs and a cat and are looking for a great vet in the East Falls area.
 • My husband works late (sometimes until 2:00 am) and has lots of money in his pocket when he is off work. No he is not a stripper , he is a waiter. Is there a train or other safe mode of transportation to East Falls from Center City at this time? Are there any unsafe stops to be concerned about en-route from CC to EF?
 • Are there grocery stores near the EF train station area?
 • Are there hospitals or medical centers in the area?
 • Are there any hazardous waste/paper mills, etc. nearby to be worried about?

Thanks for your input, it's greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome!

While I am a pastor, I am also a Chaplain at Albert Eisntein Med Ctr - it is on Broad St in N Philly. I am very proud of the diverse population we serve and the quality of our healthcare system. We are a Level 1 Trauma Ctr and Transplant Ctr, too. I think you would find a level of care not surpassed by many. Please be safe when traveling on public modes; we have had some incidents. I am sure all will be well but vigilence is key.

Welcome home!

We take our cats to the Cat Doctor on 22nd st. It's down Kelly Drive, in Fairmount. They're really great.

I realize you also have two dogs, you could ask them for a recommendation. I would trust their advice.

I think my gf uses this vet for her cats as well and she likes them a lot. I know she's talked about dogs in the waiting room so they must handle both.

oh and concerning your question about late-night transport to East Falls:

Unfortunately Septa buses tend to stop running between 12pm and 1am for the most part. And not many buses seem to run through East Falls.

The R6 regional rail added late night service, but I don't know if the last train is after 2am or not. I'd think that your hubby might not get out until after that point and thus unable to make the last train.

Biking along Kelly Drive out to East Falls is generally safe, though I've never done that ride after midnight and there are incidents of attacks (both mornings and evenings) every so often.

A cab ride from downtown runs around $20 and might be your only choice.

The last train leaves about 11:30, getting to the Falls about midnight.

See this thread for more info http://www.phillyblog.com/philly/man...mendation.html

* Are there grocery stores near the EF train station area
>>>Nope. The closest true grocery store is in Roxborough. marketplaceateastfalls.com is ~1 mile from the train station but it closes at 6- its a farmers market of sorts.
* Are there hospitals or medical centers in the area?
>>>Rox Memorial and Einstein are a short drive. People say to avoid Rox, but as already stated Einstein is a great hospital.
* Are there any hazardous waste/paper mills, etc. nearby to be worried about?
>>>Not that I know of.

The marketplace closes at 7.

There is a grocery at Conrad and Bowman, two blocks from the train, and at Ridge and Midvale, also two blocks from the train. Neither is a supermarket, but the OP used the word GROCERY.

It used to cost me $10 for a cab ride from downtown to the Falls, but I walked a little at either end to keep the cost down, getting off at Ridge and Midvale, for instance, and the price might have gone up recently.

EF is somewhat close to CC; if he gets off the train at EF he should be ok if he has general street smarts and watches his back.

I believe Conrad Market is on Conrad St. For alcohol, it'll be Billy Murphy's.

Many people from EF go th Hahnemann Hospital for quality healthcare. Roxborough ("Memorial") is good but not as good as Hahnemann.

p.s. Welcome. Everybody in EF has a dog.
