EFPHILLY..as I am fairly new to the community could you please post an address I should write a letter to. The speed on this road is out of control. This young person's loss of life could serve some purpose if we can find some way to make drivers aware of their dangerous actions. Any other suggestions of how to get the city to respond?

Instead of writing letters to the city which will likely find their way to the trash can once received, I'd suggest leveraging the many, many politicians (local/state/federal) who live within 5 blocks of this location and directly engage them. Neighborhoods such as upper East Falls with a high concentration of resident politicians tend to get issues such as this resolved that much faster - take advantage of this and use it to your favor!

Thank God there were no pedestrians around there at the time.

Post Sad Loss

The man killed in the accident was a good friend of mine. I will miss him dearly. It saddens me that people can say that he brought this upon himself. You didn't know him, and if did you would be very lucky to have someone like him in your life even if it was just for a short time. My heart goes out to not only his family but his friends, it still doesn't seem real. You will be missed Nick. P.S. I haven't forgotten about dinner.

mg: so whats the story? I will admit that Ive gone fast a few times on Henry on my motorcycle...and I couldnt imagine driving 90 in a car. Short of a true race car, I couldnt imagine a car going that fast on Henry in a car...and I like to drive fast cars.

Sorry to hear that you lost a friend.

MG.. so sorry for your loss and our thoughts are with Nick's family and friends. I do not believe anyone should die such a horrible tragic death. My hope is that his death will serve a purpose and cause change for the community.

How about speed cameras?

Both the red light cameras and "Selective Enforcement Zone -Fines doubled" signs seem to really slow down the Boulevard traffic during the day. At night time its still a bit of a race track...but the speed cameras will stop that.

Default Very sad

Manayunkgirl: I am very sorry you lost your friend. Eventhough I want to address the speeding issue with local officials, does not mean I didn't feel sympathy for him or his family. My heart was breaking as I watched the accident knowing it wasn't going to have a good ending and again as I saw his family and friends during their vigil - and I don't even know him.

As a PP stated, it is so sad, but maybe it will bring some good as I've heard one argument against slowing speed has been that the accidents haven't been very bad and no one has been killed.

My sympathies are with his family. It is so sad for a life to be cut short so young. This was echoed by many at the scene.

Not sure what to think after seeing this pic of the car. That car looks FUBAR.. that would mean HIGH RATE OF TRAVEL. While I dont know the "full story" from the looks of the damage the driver was speeding. I was involved in an accident recently and I'm very luck to be alive ( I was going faster then he was) so I say this with experience... I did bring that upon myself for driving that fast in the first place also its hard to flip a car when you aren't doing more then 50 mph.. My condolences go out to family and friends. I can only hope they learn from this like mine did. Not sure what to say about rumble strips or speed bumps. I wonder if he was just tryin to pass one of the many many id10t's that drive on that road. Cameras and more police aren't going to do a thing, maybe slow some people down for a bit but it will go back. Are there any signs in the area warning of curve ahead? Local drives should know better but out of towner's might need a little heads up. That should take care of everyone and put the responsibility back onto the driver where is should be.. Personal Responsibility

Thanks for the list of people to contact about conditions on this piece of henry ave. Problem is not just the s-curve, but also the downward slope as one goes into the curve - going fast it becomes a real problem.

As many have stated, accidents are MANY, although thankfully really bad ones not so frequent - but there should be none. I also worry about people walking along henry ave, but also about those of us who do any work in front of our houses.

Rumble strips would help, but for residents, it would increase noise levels even more than they now are. I have two other suggestions for traffic calming: (1) decrease traffic flow to one lane in each direction and put in a green strip along the median. The green planted strip in the median will have the effect of making the road appear even narrower than it is, and that will do much to slow traffic down; (2) consult a number of traffic engineers for their opinions on how best to slow down traffic here.

Changing to single lanes will have other beneficial effects: fewer trucks using henry ave to drive through, and fewer busses using this road as a shortcut to the terminal.
