I'm really surprised by all these Well Grounded horror stories. I went there several times and, while I agree their coffee was just so-so and the one time I had a bagel there the cream cheese was nasty, I never had a bad experience with the employees. The owner seemed nice enough.
There's one very different possible reason for closing that's been overlooked in this thread. Last time I was there the owner was extremely pregnant - less than a month before due date. The reason for selling could have been for purely personal reasons as much as anything.
It seems like East Falls has been on the verge of becoming something really cool for the past several years, but for some reason it can't get quite over the hump. It's not backsliding, though, so I'd still be reasonably optimistic that it's finally going to cross the Rubicon in the next few years.
