Default Who remembers Cheech and Chong at the Scuttlebutt (Keenans) in 1973?

I had a flashback last week.

I was 12 and wasn't allowed or couldn't afford the ticket to Cheech and Chong playing a gig at the Scuttlebutt Swim Club. But a few of us went there anyway. We ended up at the apartment building right above the pool. I had spent my summer at that pool but that is another story. We were sitting on some steps watching the stage get put together and people started showing up, both to the club itself and to our little vantage point. We thought we would have the perfect free view, until the cops showed up and chased us away. We did go up and around the back of the woolworths when the show started, but it was impossible to see the stage and the echo made it sound awful so we left.

Yesterday while driving down Ridge ave I took a detour down domino lane. Went back behind those apartments above Keenans to those steps I remember from 34 years ago.

And took some sad pictures.

Anybody else remember that place?

Who owns the property now? It's a disgrace!

Default Domino Lane

It's Keenans behind the IVY Ridge Shopping center. That is if it's still called the IVY Ridge shopping center

When it first became Keenans I know they kept the pool going for a little while but that could be 20 years ago.

Don't get me wrong they are a excellent caterer and I know dozens of people that have had parties there over the years.

I just have a summer full of memories from that place from 1972. Which I wrote about in a story called First Crush

It doesn't look all that depressing to me. That is the back of the building and it is the middle of January you know...

As far as I know the pool is still open during the summer including this upcoming summer.

Behind the pool is a patio with piles of broken picnic tables. They appear to match a birdseye view from virtual earth from 2 years ago. Behind that is a basketball court that is half broken concrete and filled with shrubs. Behind that and the most depressing part is what used to be the playground. That is completely over run with shrubs and trees. Barely visible are two little ride on springy animals. When I was 13 and playing pinball or the pong machine my 6 year old sister was back in the playground.
