A figure of speech in which one word or phrase is substituted for another with which it is closely associated, as in the use of Washington for the United States government or of the sword for military power I'll admit, I'm a little lost as to why that definition applies to "East Falls" or what the heck a "floating signifier" is. It sounds like something from the grammar portion of 10th Grade English, which I've mercifully blocked from memory. By the above analogies, "Washington" and "US Government" are essentially synonyms; I don't think there's another term for "East Falls" that can also be used to refer to that neighborhood. Or am I just really overthinking things here? |

I work in CC but I was hoping some of the guys (i.e., Mr. CanyousparesomechangesoIcanhavesomethingtoeaaaaaaa at) would have friends in EF who imbibe as well...
Or, if I had enough guts, I'd ask the gentleman who walks around Manayunk Ave in a puffy winter coat in the summer, with his jug of "iced tea". Alas, that gent is a bit too scary for me... |

Is a thread about 40s metonymical with respect to the posters here ignoring the real problem of the homeless? This problem will rear it's ugly head very, very soon as the nights get colder. (And yes, they are in East Falls, probably closer than you think).

Yeah, wow, I just looked at a 19129 boundary map and there's some choice homeless real estate that I'd claim if I were without home. I keep forgetting that EF pinwheels out in strange ways and ain't limited to "the shire" where I dwell. So, yeah, this warrants a reordering of priorites: 1) What can we do to help our homeless brethren? 2) Where can MY FRIEND get a 40 oz. glass bottle of Olde English "800" malt liquor in 19129? 3) What does it mean to live/die in a location named after a feature of the landscape that no longer exists? Split up into groups of five and discuss amongst yourselves.

Well, the falls at "East Falls" are there - however, they're currently underwater, because the Fairmount Dam at the Art Museum raises the water level so that A) the water is now several feet higher and B) the water is moving much slower because it's beginning to be more like a lake than a river. Maybe you aren't asking correctly and are misunderstood by the shopkeepers; the correct pronounciation is "FOE-tee".
Go into the crappiest looking deli near you that has a beer license and ask, "Excuse me, kind sir (or madam), do you have a foe-tee of oh eee?" As Billy Dee Williams used to say, works every time. But seriously, look for a well lit (maybe too well lit), but seedy place, with a long row of glass doored refrigerators. They most likely will have it. |
