This has been talked about before, but here is what I know.
It is technically Montgomery County, so any complaints need to go to Montgomery County and not Philadelphia. The light is actually 10 seconds with 12-13 with the Yellow. You can usually get 5-7 cars through in that time period. If a car isn't paying attention, obviously the number decreases. If there is a back up I usually will go down to Kelly or go right and up Belmont and do a U turn. |

That is absolutely the worst light in existence. I wholeheartedly agree.
There is a lot of traffic at that intersection coming off 76 trying to make a left towards the 'yunk. Anyone who lives here knows that it's quicker to make a right and turn around in the Sunoco, or go thru the light that runs next to Wawa. More often than not I do a turnaround, b/c you feel like you're waiting FOREVER otherwise. |

Careful with the whole "turn right and make a U" bit. I used to commute through there on Belmont, and dumb people making Us in the gas station used to make a big mess of traffic. I would probably recommend the Wawa instead.
Luckily, I don't think I've ever turned left at that light, just right. *knocks on wood*

I think that light (judging by the pole and the fact that, I believe, Belmont Ave. is not PennDot maintained) is owned by Montgomery County. So the fact that it causes back-ups on a state-owned highway (76) and most of that traffic that gets backed up (the ones turning left) is going into the city (Manayunk) and not to MontCo means that MontCo could care less.
In any event, I don't think PennDOT runs any lights. They might install them (on state highways) but then they turn over operation to the local municipality. |

Penndot is being blamed for the new traffic light fiasco at 30th St station. My personal worst is the left turn signals at grant Av and the Blvd. Instead of fixing the problem the city put in red light cameras to add insult to injury.
But getting back to Penndot...they are the original gang that couldn't shoot straight. They make PGW look smart. I think the last thing Penndot did right was when they built the PA turnpike back in the 30's, although it is obsolete now.

There's another problem right in that area that worries me - coming from Bala area to Manayunk (WaWa on your left, then Sunoco), the first light you come to is a big problem. As you approach it, the light to the far left is green, and you cannot see the center lights because of the bridge/overhang. Well, when you are finally right on top of it, you see that the lights are RED! But that one to the far left is still GREEN!
I assume this light is for foot traffic? I'm not really sure. But it is never the same as the light for vehicle traffic, and I've seen some very-near-collisions right there because you can't see the color till you are right on top of it. I've also seen plenty of people STOPPING at the light when they are entering the onramp for 76 right there! |
