...the bad news, is that someone tried to break into my neighbor's house last night around 2 am.

But within 60 seconds of my neighbor calling 911, 3 cop cars showed up.

And yes - when the 911 call is properly conveyed as a "true emergency" I have seen some really fast response times...

They put tape on the window of the door to keep it from shattering, but the door is so old that the glass is pretty thick, so my neighbor's woke up after hearing thumping...

They didn't even make it inside the house, but they're (my neighbors) pretty shaken up.

And I agree, break in in progress is what to say!

That's scary. Usually break-ins occur when people are away from their homes, either working in the day or on vacation.

Finally someone NOT bashing the cops.

I don't bash cops most of the time. It's a job I wouldn't do, simply for the fact that it's a [edit: corrected typo to show "thankless"] thankless job, but one where you also get to see a bunch of worthless scum get arrested, re-arrested, and re-re-arrested, and there's nothing you can do except sit silently while being laughed at and mocked by the scumbags.

Just a clarification, did you mean that its a thankless job? Or do you mean its worthless (i.e. valueless)? It seems to me that having police is a pretty valuable asset in any society...

Can you give any more details - like, where was this in Manayunk or Roxborough - do they think it was one individual or multiple? Where they trying to come in through both the window and door? Did the house of have its lights on or was it dark?

I don't know how many people they think it was - it was 2:30 am when I had my dog out (he'd woken us up about a half hour before - good guard dog!) and I didn't talk to the police. My husband talked to our neighbor this morning and they didn't have a lot of information to go on...

The door is a french door, so it has glass in it. I suspect they were trying to break a glass pane to then unlock the door from the inside, and then walk through the door. The door is a side entrance door.

Lights were off, although I'm pretty sure they kept their backyard spotlight on (they always do). Unfortunately, that doesn't shine on the side door.

Er, hahaha ... good catch. I had my daughter beside me, yelling, "Hello!" -- begging for attention -- while typing. Seems I got a little too distracted. Yes, it is a thankless job.
