Default On Edwin Booth

Edwin Booth was known as one of the country's greatest Shakespearean actors. But I doubt very much if he was involved in the 1844 Southwark/Kensington riots, as he would only have been 11 years old at the time and was not living in Philadelphia.

Furthermore, Edwin was not John Wilkes Booth's father, but one of his brothers. The father was Junius Brutus Booth, also a great actor.

(I thought for a moment that the confusion had to do with the famous actor Edwin Forrest, who is known for his role in the Astor Place theatrical riot in New York City in 1849. But although Forrest was a Philadelphian, he was not a Catholic, and it is doubtful that he would have been on the scene defending St. Philip Neri.)

If the list at the church indeed states that "Edwin Booth" took part in the defense, it must refer to some other, more obscure Edwin Booth -- not the famous actor.

Thanks, knowing that about Booth is helpful.

I believe these are from Alexander's Express Messenger PAHRC has one of the few original copies of this newspaper and we have an almanac which details the events as well.
