Default scooters + helmets? not hip?

In my travels around the city, I see too many scooterists riding around without helmets. The majority of these riders barely know how to use these things.

The most extreme example was this hispter wannabe on her $5500 Vespa swerving across 3 lanes of the parkway wearing just a sundress. She had NO IDEA of how to negotiate the turn going just 25mph. Scary.

Whats the deal? Is it not cool to scoot around the city with a helmet?

They're just doing their part to make replacement organs more readily available.

Scooters - helmets + crash = senseless death or life-threatening injury. Not hip.

I can tell you that I personally wear one of two helmets when I ride my scooter--a silver full face helmet or a white 3/4 helmet. I'm pretty sure the helmets look pretty dorky based on the responses I get from passersby, especially people in pickup trucks (usually two guys riding together), who have been known to point and laugh as if me on a scooter is a funny thing. Also, once at a light about three or four Harley riders pulled up behind me and started cursing at and insulting me--similar mentality.

Seriously though, I think alot of guys masculinity is threatened by scooter riders and they feel like they have to be cool by laughing and pointing. Not sure what's up with that.

Helmets are very cool. I always wear one, scooting or biking. What do EMTs call motorcycles, donor-cycles?? Anyway, it's always the insecure people who make fun of others, right?

I read "...wear one *or* two helmets..." It's always fun when I make myself laugh out loud

Oh, and I am pro-helmet. My head's already screwed up enough - no need to add to it.

Riding a scooter itself is already pretty dorky, so you might as well go all the way and wear a helmet.

Remember kids, always wear a helmet when sitting in a folding chair.
