Default people living on a SEPTA bus

I took a bus home yesterday, got on at 17th and Market, instead of taking the subway as I usually do.

I walked towards the back of the bus (this was one of those 1 1/2 level buses) and see a large man sprawled across the back row with a blanket and some foam padding. The bus was packed but no one was sitting in the back few rows. The back of the bus smelt like piss and god knows what else.

I couldn't believe this person was allowed to set up camp in the bus. I realize that homelessness is a major problem in the city, but this was ridiculous.

How are we ever going to be a world-class city with this kind if indignity accepted? I read the recent Inky special on homelessness, and it saddens me we can't fix this system.

New SEPTA General Manager Joe Casey is very open to constructive suggestions on improving the system. You should contact him: jcasey@septa.org.

It happens in world-class city too. Go google it.

Did you tell the Bus driver? They exactly can't see in the back of those accordion buses(which is how he probably got away with it.)

Sadly I notice a rise of homelessness on the EL and BSL lately.

The city realized its cheaper to let them
camp out on Septa instead of all the social
services, cops, social workers when they are on the street ...
