Default philadelphia street signs

There are some street signs in Philadelphia that have a liberty bell symbol on them - anyone know what this means? Why would one street sign have the liberty bell symbol but not another?

I don't know. The big red octagonal signs seem to be meaningless, though.

The big rectangular signs are going to be taken down from
certain street intersections and it is rumored they will be put
up in many of the offices at City Hall. They work at two
speeds over there ......... Slow and .........

YUP ......

Through work I have the Streets Department traffic guidelines manual on my desk, so this is an easy question to answer. It just has to do with the length of the streetname. The sign automatically gets a liberty bell if it has less than either 5 or 7 characters in the street name, depending on the size of the sign.

I believe that depends on how recently the signs were replaced. The bell was a recent spec change.

yeah, i've been looking around and I really haven't seen a correlation between the length of the street name and the liberty bell sign. And it's not a recent thing - this question has been bugging me since I moved to Philly - about 7 years ago.

How often is a street sign replaced? I would expect they should last a lot longer than seven years, so most of the bell-free signs are probably just old.
