In my experience, Verizon DSL works close to the rated speed.
I'd check for bad wiring in your home (is your phone line noisy?), or a phone that isn't on a filter; both of those can result in severe speed degradation. |

I have had the basic 756 kbps in a circa 1965 Center City hi-rise for two years and I can't believe how fast it is. I couldn't ask for anything better.

I had similar issues at my previous home. I would call for a technician but I would have the following looked at:
Make sure phone line coming into house is in good condition. It took 4 visists by technicians for one to figure out the the line coming into the house was worn out and needed replacing and that fixed the issue.... |

My DSL just got a lot faster. It was down completely for several days, so Verizon sent a technician who said the line was running all through the house before it arrived at the room where we had our modem hooked up--even though the main box for the whole house was right outside that room.
So he drilled a hole through our windowsill and connected the jack in the office directly to the box outside, and now things are much better. So maybe check how far the line has to travel before it gets to you? |

That's pretty much my setup too. I'm using Cavalier but it's on Verison's lines - so really it is the same difference in the end. Our house is full of old phone wiring (really - it's totally crazy) so a single line into the house from the box direct into the modem was the best solution.

My DSL works fine most of the time, but if there is a storm in the area I normally lose service for a couple of hours. It need not be raining or especially windy at my house, just being in hte area is enough to kick me off.
Other than that DSL has been OK. |
