I'm just starting to brew my own beer, and wondering if there are homebrew experts or other amateurs in the Mt. Airy area who'd like to get together at some point to share tips and beers. The Homebrew Club based at Home Sweet Homebrew doesn't seem very active, and I'd rather find some other locals, anyway.

I brew with two partners in West Mt. Airy, and would be willing to answer questions and provide assistance. We brew 11 gallon all- grain batches ranging from British low-gravity bitters up to Belgian triples. I am also a (lapsed) certified beer judge with special experience in Belgian ales.
If there's something in particular you have in mind, post it here and I will try to be of assistance. It would definitely be a good idea to generate some activity in the greater Germantown area, especially since the two active brew stores are each 10 miles away. Should the time come to meet, the obvious place would be at Earth Bread + Brewery, whenever they finally open. Last edited by pseitz : 07-11-2008 at 02:38 PM. Reason: Update |

I don't have any specific questions right now, but the more I brew, I'm sure some will come up. So far I've had a great response to questions from George and Nancy at Home Sweet Homebrew. I just bottled my first batch last night and am starting a batch of Hefeweizen soon.
It would be cool just to meet fellow homebrewers and learn more just by watching or helping. It sounds like you guys really know what you're doing! I agree that a meetup at Earth Bread & Brewery would be appropriate. |

I notice that as of this morning more than 200 people have checked this thread. Either there are a lot of Mt. Airy/Germantown brewers out there or a lot of people are really starved for entertainment!
Seriously, it does seem like the time has come for a local group to come together in our fair burg. Is everyone so advanced that they don't need to talk to anyone anymore? Didn't we all get into brewing because it's an inherently social thing to do? According to the latest IRS mileage reimbursement rate, the closest active "active" club is more than $15 away. Wouldn't it be great to walk? Lurkers--fellow brewers--what do you think about this? |

I'd love to join. I'm researching (reading) homebrewing right now and plan to start in the fall when I have more time and temps are better but, as a beer-geek, I'd love to get some tips and pointers before I delve in. At the very least I never have a problem enjoying some good beers and shooting the breeze. Keep me informed on any 'events' happening in the area as I'm a West Mt. Airy resident and a psuedo regular at McMenamins and can't wait for Bread to open as well.
