Default Moving to Mt Airy

Hi there,
My family and I will be relocating to Mt Airy this summer. I really loved the area but would like to know if there are any streets, sections of the neighborhood that are better than others to live on? For instance what's E Sedgewick around Mt Pleasant like? Any thoughts on West vs East Mt Airy? Are there any parts that are safer than others or more family oriented?
Any suggestions would be really helpful.

Default Who are we? Mount Airy

Hello and Happy Thursday,

Mt. Airy is a great and diverse neighborhood. On the East side anything above Mt. Airy Avenue and over the 400 block to Stenton Avenue is pretty good. On the West side anything above Mt. Pleasant Avenue and past the 400 block is pretty good as well and anything above Lincoln Drive. Rich McIlhenny is a realtor that grew up and still lives in the area and would be a great resource for you to contact. His number is 215 275-6303. There are lots of social organizations in the Neighborhood as well as childrens activities at such places as Allens Lane Art Center and Weavers Way Coop.

Welcome to the area and good luck

I would say that anything above Gorgas Lane on the East Side is nice, and I would include virtually all of the West Side is nice. Maybe I'm not as particular.

Default East vs. West

Thanks Brian

OP

There are numerous threads on this subject on Philly blog. Here are a couple

I grew up on the West Side and now live on the East Side, both sides have beautiful areas and both sides are imperfect. Try not to get locked into the West is All Good And East is only a Little Good mentaility that many newcomers are given.

Figure out what you can afford to spend (buying or renting?) and pick the listings that have the features that you are looking for in your price range and check them out. Beforehand if you have time, drive around the areas in the day and the evening to get a sense of what the neighborhood is like. If you are working with an agent, have them take you around and tour the area if they are willing.

Good luck and welcome to Mt Airy

I'd have to disagree about the thinking that Mt. Airy marks the border of nice neigborhoods in E. Mt. Airy. The area between Mt. Airy and (at least) Gorgas has some fantastic streets with beautiful homes with nice sized yards. I haven't explored much beyond Gorgas but there are some lovely houses and nice looking neighborhoods heading even further east. (The 200 block of Meehan Street has perhaps some of the coolest architecture in Mt. Airy with Art Deco townhouses).

As for the areas you mentioned, we live on East Sedgwick and love it. The street is lovely--big trees on nice lawns and lots of gardens. Our neighbors are incredibly friendly. It's also much more diverse than people seem to give E Mt. Airy credit for. The only drawback I find is that it's a wide street so people tend to drive a bit faster than they do on the narrower Mt. Airy roads.

Good luck in your search!

East Mount Airy has it's nice parts and it's bad parts. I am a big advocate for anything between Crittenden and the R-7 railway between Upsal Street and Woodbrook Lane. The Architecture on alot of the homes north of Vernon Road are simply fantastic from my memory. Best thing to do is to take a drive/walk and look around and see if there is anything you like that is available.
